Optics - Holo or Red Dot?

I currently own a Red Dot and am extremely happy with it. One of my friends purchased a Holo scope yesterday (which I haven't had an opportunity to use in a game yet). As cool as the thing looked, I could see my upside down reflection in it.

#1 - Is this reflection a nuisance when playing in glare-y conditions?
#2 - what are the benefits of a Holo scope over a red dot?
#3 - What are the benefits of a red dot scope over a Holo scope?

Likely simple answers, but I'm sure people will have their opinions on this matter! :fro:

With airsoft "holo" sights, there is no upside to using them aside from they look cool. Real ones have benefits over say aimpoint type reddot sights but they are expensive.
I've seen some where it looks like mirror at some angles, rendering them useless.

In airsoft "holo"sights are just shitty compressed reddot sights. Thus, regular reddots are better as they are setup in the layout the system requires to function properly.

the "Holo sights" in airsoft, are actually red dots in a different shell.

unless you go real steel there is no difference aside from looks.

Unless you go RS, red dot all the way.

I personally like red dot a lot better than holo because it's easier for me to acquire a target (with my scope, at least).
I run a Tasco "wide-view" red dot, and that thing is pretty big. In terms of total lens area, I'd say it's 1.5-2x larger than an eotech or holo.

Holo sights are also significantly heavier than most red dot sights. It may not be a lot when you're holding it in your palm, but when its on your gun, and the gun starts getting into the 10lb+ range, it becomes an issue.

Bah:

Eotech 552 - 309g

Eotech XPS3 - 227g

Aimpoint T1 w/ Mount - 105g

Aimpoint PRO w/ Mount - 329g

CMORE Rail - 142g

While you're not wrong, the weight difference is minuscule, and you'll pay for the weight reduction (T1 vs PRO, XPS3 vs 552), and the CMORE is a competition sight, I just included it for a reference vs mil gear.

Go with what you're comfortable with. I went with a PRO as the ARD is $50 and already saved my lens twice, it also has NV modes, and 2 year battery life while on position 6 (leave it on optic).

Red dots if you want to really use it. The guys I play with just leave their non working eotech on for looks.

Get a optic shield. I got my tiny red dot shot out a few years ago. I now run only iron sights.

Solid points from Shelled Pants.

I love the Cmore sight, and have a personal soft spot for them. I've been through a lot of different reflex sights, but I keep coming back to that one.

Well.. my panoramic reflex is probably <200g.... when I put my 1.25-5x visionking shortdot on instead... that thing weighs in the 500g rang ON TOP of the mount for it which weighs another 300g. I could get rings for it instead of a mount, and that would drop it significantly, but I've hardly used it.

It doesn't seem like a lot, you're right, but as the day goes on the suck factor starts to go higher and higher as a cumulative effect.

I've only ever seen a few airsoft holos do well in bright sunlight. I would say if you like the look of it to try before you buy... maybe a few vendors will allow you to turn it on and look at bright shit to see if you can still see the reticle. Huang at airsoft depot usually gives good feedback on which optics in stock are good for what. All of the better eotech replicas I've seen have come from him.

reflex is better in CQB, less clutter, less obscurity from the RDS body.
conventional red dots for everything else, assuming you even want to run a replica red dot outside. I find every RDS except the specterDR, once you dial it up bright enough to even see the dot outside, has so much glare to the dot, it's just useless. Same goes for indoors.
My specterDR is a 4x (actually more like 3.5x), fixed crosshair, and has the most crisp and clear dot I've ever seen on a replica. To the point where you could probably actually use the green "NV" settings with an NVD.
