ICS Mechbox

I'm doing some info gathering here for my next planned project. I want to build an M4A1 from scratch with the ICS mechbox as the base...

Well, I couldn't remember for the life of me whether the ICS mechbox required specific internals or if I could use regular (ie. Systema) V2 parts?
Also, similar question for the rest of the metal body. Do I need any specific parts or will most other brands fit along with it?

Any useful advice is also appreciated as I'm still in the planning stages.

The ICS split mechbox is for the most part a V2, but there are some special components in it like the anti-reverse latch. A standard V2 anti reverse latch will fit in it, but you will lose the functionality of the forward assist to decock the spring. Also the mechbox shell itself has dimensions similar to a reinforced V2 mechbox. You'll have a bit of a tough time making it fit in a non ICS metal body. The hopup is similar to a standard unit, but it'll take some modding to either get the stock one to fit, or to get another brand like Systema to fit.

the ICS V2 split gearbox is a few mm longer towards the back then a normal TM V2 gearbox. the ICS M4's reciver is also slightly longer to fit the gearbox.
i have yet to find a TM compatible reciver that will fit the ICS gearbox.

Also the bushings sizes are a little different. Aftermarket bushings will fit, but you will have to squeeze them in. If you use ICS metal bushings they will only fit ICS gears. So if you want to take the time to aling the aftermarket ones just perfect you can use other gears.

Also try to pick up an ICS pistol grip, as it sits at a slightly different angle. There is a mod out there to fit a G27 grip but it will require some dremel work.

If the goal is to have a mechbox with quick spring change capability, try looking into the STAR version 2 mechbox. It's not a split mechbox design, but it does have quick spring change.

So if I get aftermarket 6mm bushings I won't be able to use my stock ICS gears anymore?

No you should be able to, as the ICS gears are a tab smaller than the TM ones. I suggest using vice grips to put your bushings in. It will shave a bit of the metal off of the gearbox and if done in a hurry it can screw up your gears.

The ICS bushings are both smaller in diameter, and the inside of the bushings are slightly smaller. Does that make sense?

Gotcha. So the ICS gears will sit a bit loose in the aftermarket bushings then? Hmm I don't like the sound of that either.

Yup, you got it. I would suggest getting other gears, as ICS gears suck, but then again, if you mess up aligning your gears you'll need a new lower gearbox
