Above is a good start. It's recommended to use the search function. This specific topic has been discussed quite often.

Cheers.

All FPS measurements assume .20 gram BB's are being fired.

If you use .25's then if the limit is 400 FPS you should be shooting a little under 360 FPS.

The standard size is a 6mm BB (actually it around 5.9x +/- .0x mm), there is only one other size and it's not too common so don't worry about it (it's 8mm BTW).

Velocity limits depend on the field. Most outdoor fields are 400 FPS but it's a limit not a goal, allow a deviation of +/- 5 FPS or so (you don't want to be shooting 396, 399, 395, then 403 cause then it will be disallowed).

Indoor CQB it's usually 350 MAX but 330 (I believe it corresponds to 1 Joule of work put into the BB) is the usual limit for 80% of indoor CQB fields.

As for the range rule (I assume you mean what distance to mercy at).... It depends but 20-25 feet is probably a safe distance to mercy if you're running a "hot" rifle (400 FPS). If you're only running a 350 FPS rifle 10-15 ft is probably a safe distance.

Sniper Rifles work on different rules and you need to separate sniper rifles and BA rifles.

A "semi automatic" (single shot) sniper rifle can go 425 or 450 (Assuming .20 gr BB) (with an MED of 25-30 ft or so)
A BA (Bolt Action) rifle *can* (but doesn't necessarily have to) go up to 500 FPS (again assuming .20 gr BB) (however your MED might be 30-40 ft and you have to switch to a secondary for engaging at closer distances)

With AEG's you can make it a single shot pseudo-"BA" rifle and the trick is to install a MOSFET that locks it to semi only (no matter what fire setting it's set on) with a 1 second delay between shots.

Should be noted many issues arise from mercying people.

Best to shoot him with your sub 350 fps gun at any range. Thats my personal policy.
I've had too many times where it was an issue. IMO it cheapens the game to call mercies within a close range. I wear a mouth guard and am willing to have other people do the same to me.

With 350+fps guns, though, its just not worth it for the most part. Depends on face protection being used.

Your local club will have their own rules...

Why are the FPS's so low?

We should be comparing to Paintball. Paintballs weigh in at about 3g. And fly anywhere from 250-295fps which is about 9-12joules.

A BB that weighs 0.36g flying at 600fps is only 6 joules. And 0.43 flying at 550fps is also, only 6 joules. Which is way less than the force of a paintball.

Why wouldn't this be considered when playing the sport?

Unless I'm just being ignorant... Then, Just forget I posted.

You've obviously never dug a BB out of your skin.

Well, for one, paintballs will break and spread the engery over a larger area, where a BB will blow apart your skin at those speeds or break your gogs.

^^ what Shelled said

Smaller impact area = more penetration

BB's go in, paintballs expand out.

I've had a BB lodge its self inside my right bicep.. Getting it out felt like popping the world's most painful pimple... it took forever to heal too all that's left is a circular, small 6mm scar lol

A 0.36g BB flying at 600fps and having a muzzle energy of 6 Joules = firearm under Canadian Law: over 500fps AND over 5.7J.

That makes WONDERFUL sense now!

Thanks for clearing that up for me!
