what to look for in a radio?

just wondering what features/options i should be looking for when buying a radio??

ive got a $50 gift card to walmart, so i was thinking of going to check out their sports/hunting section, im pretty sure ive seen some 2 way radios there before, but couldnt find anything on their canadian webiste

just wanted an idea of what the radio should be/have?? or anything to avoid??

Most people around here just run Motorola Talkabouts. Cheap, work well enough and lots of headset options.

IMO, say away from Cobras, everyone that I know who's had one does not like them.

Find out what kind of radios the local players use. If they're all on bubble radios then you won't need some sort of of crazy encrypted high power handset.

If they are all on the fancy stuff then you'll need to go past the Walmart specials to something a bit more pro.

Yes and no. While a popular choice mostly due to availability and a decent reputation for quality, I would say UHF radios are becoming equally popular, at least among the members here.

Point taken about the Cobras... debatable quality and more difficult to pimp out with accessories. Avoid.

For the OP, I do not believe Walmart is an official Motorola Two-Way distributor in Canada so I am not sure what your options will be. Maybe save the gift card for something else and purchase the radios through another retailer.

If you need info on the current Moto lineup, drop me a line.

Cheers!

I must be the odd man out here but I love cobra radios. I have used the older and newer (own a pair of these) of my radio and it is very very good quality wise. The Cheap PTTs I got too work very very well with them too.

Now my radios can be a bit pricey ($80-90ish) but most radios are around that price anyways.

I'd go for Cobra or Motorola however.

Check RADIO SHACK!!!!! I got mine from there and they had a bunch of stuff.

Walmarts in KW, atleast in St. Jacobs doesn't have alot I think. Could be wrong though. The Kitchener store may though, check there.

What my question is, does the element of surprise work on a typical airsoft match?

+1 on the Puxing-888's, just bought one from Radiogearpro.com and find it's far better range than bubblepacks plus they have an FM Radio feature which I enjoy. I must of missed Techseller's sales page, oops! maybe next time.
cheers

btw turns out walmart didnt have any radios at all :/

although i did ask sum1 in electronics if they had 2 way radios....and he walked me over to the boom box isle and said "yes we have plenty but most of them arent just radios, they usually have a cd player too" lol

ended up spending the gift card on a folding hex key tool, a flashlight, and some krylon camo paint to paint my mask so wasnt a complete waste

Also get one where you can remove the beep beep sound. Nothing more frustrating than sneeking in a room and jumping every time a com is ended with two loud Beep beeps.
