Fixing a PTT

So its come upon me to fix a PTT that I've aquired.

I have little to no knowledge on any type of electrical repair.

I've taken it apart though and I've come into a few questions.

First off, from the 5 pin connector is 3 red wires and a white wire, the 5th pin is unused. 2 of the red ones go into the button and come out as a black which goes out to the jack. The other red and white wire go out to the jack as well.

At the end of the line though where the jack is supposed to attach, theres a yellow wire. Where in gods name does that come from? The red and white are there, and the black turns into just copper wiring. No idea about the yellow.

Secondly I have the jack and the end wires. What gets soldered to what? I can take a better picture if required.

Any help will be greatly appreciated, since this needs to be fixed for saturday.

how did you break this so quick? lol

where does the yellow on the other end go? is the other end of the cable the top middle of the first picture? if so, it looks as if the ground/neutral wire is wrapped with the yellow.

I'm not sure why they used 4 wires though as there are only 3 contacts. (unless they doubled up the ground for both the mic and ear phone.

man, if you had got that like a week ago, I could have tried to worked on it for you

pull back a bit of the heat shrink where I mentioned before. if there is a yellow wire in there, or it looks like a thicker amount of wires twisted inside, they doubled up the ground.

do you have a multimeter? test the yellow against the bare ground on the plug end not in the ptt box. if you get continuity, bob's your uncle!

determining proper ring tip sleeve config will be a bit harder but can be done if you have a multimeter.

Ground is usually coloured as either green or green/yellow striped. There are in different situations distinct "grounds", often in the form of a separate ground wire among signal or power wires with a shroud over the whole thing to prevent interference.

Pretty much.

$100-ish will get you a pretty solid PTT/headset (real-steel), that should last you a long time.
