Nooo, we like happiness. Also, starvation, disease, trench foot and running out of cigarettes sucks.

The equipment available is in fact very effective, just less comfortable to carry and heavier. Though Id agree that the level of privation expected is a little higher than what most would tolerate today.

In some ways I'd take the wool clothing over the modern stuff.

I deployed the Snugpak Ionosphere last night to give it a try. It is a different tent from my others for sure. Much larger than the Raider, both in internal volume and pack size. Both are priced the same, both have strengths and weakneses that can be deal-breakers. The Ionosphere weighs twice as much as the Raider, but has tons of internal room, enough for any man and all his gear. Setup of the Ionosphere took me a solid 20 minutes, vs. the Raider that takes me about 7.

As far as setup goes, the Raider has a QD buckle system for the fly, and you only need to add one stake for the fly at the foot, while removing the inner tent foot stake, so adding the fly takes seconds. Thee are a total of 8 stakes for the Raider. The Ionosphere requires you to have inner staked first with 8 stakes, attach 6 velcro loops to the poles, then add a further 12 stakes for the fly. The foot pole of the Ionosphere means it will not sag on the legs like the Raider will (impossible to stop that), but it means setup time is greatly extended.

The Ionosphere is profiled such that you can step into the clean, dry tent and not get your socks wet or try some yoga move to get out of your wet, muddy boots to stay clean and dry (or even your clothes). Makes getting out in the morning much easier.

For a 1-man combat tent, there is no clear winner between the two. For larger guys, or guys who want/need to store gear internally, the Ionosphere is the tent to have. For lightweight and small pack size, the Raider is the way to go. For easy setup, the Raider wins hands down. For comfort, and handling the elements, the Ionosphere with the sealed and easily accessible bathtup floor wins hands down. Both cost about $250 in Canada, the Ionosphere has OD and DE colour choices, while the Raider is only DE.

As far as long term durabilty goes, the Ionosphere has a more "quality" feel to it, but it could be fantastic with minor changes to design, simply by adding QD buckles for the fly as the fly stake points are right on top of the inner tent stake points (except at the midriff).

Tough call, going to have to keep both and use them for the appropriate games.

I ended up getting a litefighter 1 man. I wanted something more as a place to crash and escape from bugs/rain in longer games where there FOBs/CPs are semi-secure. For real tactical situations I either sleep when/where I can or use my Dutch Hooped Bivy bag.
