Homemade Rifle Rack

I am looking to make a homemade wood rifle rack to hold 4-5 rifles.

Any tips from previous projects or other DIY-ers would be great.

I found this thread, which is a great start/help:
Homemade Gun Rack Plans. Look Here! - THR

Thanks

Dood!!! I'm about to make one too. We can have a race

I want to make a recessed one if possible, if not, just stick to a big ass box sticking out of my wall.

Here's the plan:

Start with a wooden frame, detailing the face with a router most likely. (Or use trim from rona)
The back would be covered with aluminum diamond plating for a nice rugged look. (The stuff on firetrucks wooowoooowoooo)

Place the hooks horizontally so the ejection port side can be displayed. (Sexier side of the gun IMO)
For a cover, I wanted to get some steel mesh and fashion a split door with a lock on it.

To top it all off, wire some low watt halogens in there to make it the elephant in the room.

Will post pics once this project gets up and running.

Any suggestions would be nice too.

do you guys want floor racks or wall racks?

I built many wall racks but gave them all away after realizing how much i love peg Board and hooks.

Can I come play at your house? My mom says I can't cross the street though, so, how many right turns from Kitchener?

Peg Board and Hooks is the best... I bought a house that already had some installed in the basement.... I was very happy

I am looking to make a wood floor rack for 4-5 rifles max.

I am not into hanging anything on my walls. Its not a display to me, rather more of a functional storage rack that looks good at the same time

Something like this:

if they made diamond plate pegboard ..... now that would be awesome.

The best part about pegboard and hooks is... if any of you buy and sell guns as much as me you can always quickly and easily change up your wall.

Well that looks like a really nice looking simple rack design. Hard woods are going to cost you more in materials but are worth it for looks and durability. Pine is very inexpensive and smells good too. The design in the pic looks like it would work well.

I think I may go with that first, seems less expensive and elaborate.

Knock one together out of pine...stain and seal. Glue and nail. Hammer, nails, saw...that's all you need.

Buy "select" stuff that's already dimensioned and finished (don't think you have the setup to finish lumber properly)

Simple V-shaped cutouts work (and are easy to do). A plain board with pegs works too.

Points to consider:
- deep enough so that when your rifle + optic is in there the scope isn't hanging out the back...you'll end up with the rack against the wall at one point and bang your scope against the wall otherwise
- the top board that catches the rifles is at an average height....too high and shorter CQB stuff might not sit securely
- consider an additional lower board to hold sub-guns
- glue plain craft felt onto the surfaces that'll touch the guns (green and red are the traditional colours...jk made that up )
- chamfer any sharp edges or else nicks/bumps will show up more (best done with a plane...but you can use sandpaper on a wood block)
- use a framing sqare
- allow for adjustable feet (you can get them at the hardware store)...you might build it perfectly square...but your floors/walls probably aren't

If it's going pretty much permanently against a wall....you can make a top board and a separate bottom board and just secure those to the wall/floor respectively. Same if it's going into a makeshift cabinet/closet.

....after all that....they sell ready made ikea like kits at gun stores...I think Al Flaherty's had some.

Man, I'm really digging that wooden stand idea.. Would be a great way to display a WW2 collection!

The funny thing is if you posted a thread like this 4 years ago everyone and their dogs would be yelling at you for exposing your guns rather than cases or lockers.

Thanks for the tips Tys.

And HGI, I thought about that also

I am planning on buying some real-steel trigger locks for each rifle on the rack (just to play it safe and responsible).
