On prepaid credit cards

Is it possible to use them for international online orders?

Yes. I've used one for orders from Korea, Hong Kong, and Mainland China.

I think the only thing they don't work for is hotels, car rentals, and anything requiring some form of 'insurance'.

Pre-paid will work for anything that doesn't require a pre-authorization (which is why hotels don't take them). They basically work like a debit card.

I have used a few online now , without a problem prepaid visa
however I just ordered some items with a prepaid visa ,...I got the items in the mail ,assumed everything was fine ,....now they are emailing me saying the card was declined error code 200 ,..I called Visa , they say they believe some info was not entered correctly by the vendor , he has tried it twice i think ,...
& I am re-submitting the info again , but Its a weird situation be cause He already shipped me the items ! Who ships before authorization ?
Anyway at this point I am convinced the vendor is entering something wrong as Visa says there is no reason it shouldn't work , So if he still cant get it work I dont know what Im supposed to do , I dont think I can get the funds off the card into a bank account so I can emt it to him , I suppose if I have to I can take it from my account ,...but I got the prepaid card for this transaction & he has all the card info,.. so I dont want to end up being charged twice either ,...
So im not sure what to do ...

Luckily because it's pre-paid, he can't double charge you if you don't have the money on the card. I say leave it up to VISA...

Yes but because he cannot seem to get the card to go through for him , he may try to compel me to pay another way , which I wouldn't have too much of a problem with , its just that he now has ALL of that card info , so if i give him an emt,... & for some reason he gets the card working ,.....
I have called Visa twice,.. they say there is no reason it shouldn't work it has enough funds to cover the amount , When I use what I presume would be the same info, he would use, to process it ,...to log into the cards account online the status shows as active with no problems .
Visa believes he may be entering some of the info incorrectly
he says hes going to try it again , i dont think hes doing anything shady , as I can clearly see the card has not been charged ,...although i dont understand why he would ship me the items BEFORE the card goes through ?
I have them I signed for them , then I check my email & hes telling the card was declined ! Im like What the ! lol :banghead:

don't send him an alternate method of payment. you agreed to his payment terms and he agreed and accepted your visa transaction by shipping you your order. it's his fault for releasing said item prior to confirming you payment. make sure to keep the balance of what you owe him on that prepaid card and let him deal with visa for it.

It's probably an issue between him and his acquirer. Visa has nothing to do with it.

The card will have a BIN number (usually first 4 numbers). That's a Bank Information Number, and defines which FI was the supplier. So Visa might be the payment brand, but the supplier could be RBC, or TD, or Chase bank, or MBNA...whatever.

International banks may have issues processing certain BIN numbers because they don't have agreements with the acquirer to remediate the payment with the supplier institution.

In IT terms you might think of it as a routing problem. His acquirer might not know how to map a BIN number back to a financial institution.

For the VISA prepaid cards though (the ones you can buy at Esso), I am 90% sure they are 'visa gift cards' and are directly from VISA.

I've never used a visa one though, only MC, so I could be wrong.

I have a VISA one that I got through Money Mart, isn't a gift card, is a true pre-paid VISA card.

One additional thing I'll throw in. If you're planning on using it via a Paypal system, you may run into some hiccups. I once received a prepaid Visa as a gift, and using it for certain Paypal applications was a pain in the butt.

Edit: Didn't realize this was a necro, disregard.

By that, you mean it's reloadable too right?
