"Flagraiders Officially to shutdown Aug 31" Source-> City of Cambridge

Ok... I've been sitting on this for days. It has now been published in the local paper so now I'm free to talk about.

Earlier this week The Ontario Muncipal Board ruled in favour of the Corporation of the City of Cambridge in their attempt to shut down one of our favorite GTA fields.

Now as some of you may know, I work at Cambridge City Hall and have had to keep mum about most of this.

Operations at the exsisting field have to end by August 31st 2008. Hopefully Joe will have news on a new field soon.

I'm going to talk with Joe about setting up a farewell to the field game in the next week or so. Hopefully we'll be able to come up with something.

Quote:
A two-day Ontario Municipal Board hearing in Cambridge this week has upheld the city's decision regarding Flag Raiders Inc.

Cambridge council had initially given Flag Raiders Inc. permission to temporarily use a rural property at 1500 Kossuth Rd. for its paintball game for a three-year period while the company searched for a permanent location.

The city later granted a second three-year extension for the temporary use, despite objections from some neighbours.

Last year, when the company applied for a third extension, the city discovered it was breaking a regional bylaw. That, coupled with complaints from neighbours, led council to reject Flag Raiders latest extension.

Planning commissioner Janet Babcock said the city will wait to read the OMB ruling, but in the verbal decision Flag Raiders will be able to continue its business on Kossuth Road until Aug. 31.

"We still have a number of outstanding questions that we're hoping to get answers for," Babcock said.

"That's why we want to see the board's written decision. That could happen in a couple of days, a couple of weeks or whenever. There is no timeline on when these decisions are written. It depends on how busy the judge is and when they have time to write it."
OMB hasnt posted their decision on the website yet. however here is some info.
OMB case number PL080074

I have spoken to to Joe and he has advised me he has a new field and it is twice the size. Furthermore he will have an area (small) that is paint free. He also expressed a desire to have a large AS game there. Location and info to follow, but it is not far and near 401.

Yep.. I was also asked to sit on this and not leak it out, but now that its out, shame for Joe, but this could also be a good thing as this will equal a newer bigger location, better than ever!

I just want to go slap the uppedy soccer-mom neighbour that apparently complained. Leave it to this municipality/province/country to have one stupid loud mouth bitch ruin it all for the thousands that play there. Like I could see if they were planning to develope and all....but it seems that it was just a technicallity excellerated by some bitching..correct me if I'm wrong. I'm sure the city/region realizes that the place attracts many a lot of people to Waterloo Region even just for a one day of play who otherwise would never come 'round here....I mean look at all you fine folks from out of town who love this place.

So those of you who have heard about 'ze new place' .... where is it?!?!?! Please tell me it's still in Waterloo Region!

Oh and let us have one massive last game for sure! Another ZOMBIE GAME?!?! A night game on August 30th would be sweet too.

You are wrong, the land in question .. where Flagraiders is currently located is not zoned for that use. Continued operation was counter to the official plan of the municipality and put in place a precident for authorized off plan use that the counsel did not have the legal authority to approve ( despite having done so 2 times previous) Counsel had ignored the complaints of neigbours and approved the use of the land 2 times previously.. and were ready to do it again until their legal counsel advised them that they could not.

In this case counsel tired hard to allow the continued use.. but in the end the law won out. It was not the "Soccer Moms" that caused this to happen it was the slow and steady sprawl of urbanization.

and... anyone can see the development encroaching.. expect to see a residential development within a year on that site.
