Thumbs down MICH helmet painting (Rubber mold sticky)

Has this happened to anyone with a replica MICH Helmet?
The point where you spray your helmet with krylon and then the end of the helmet gets sticky and doesn't dry?

Does anyone have a solution for this?

Thanks

Same thing happened to me, I just used a dish spounge with a bit of paint thinner to carefully rub off the paint from the rubber lip. The paint dried fine on the outside, but for some reason it remained tacky on the underside, even after 3 full days of dry time.

Problem is I don't even know why it's sticky. I first sanded down with a dremel the rubber down to the black. The krylon. Yet, it is still sticky. No matter how much coats, it still gets sticky after days..

Happened to me too. Mine dried after about 6 months to a year. It's gotta be the rubber or something in it.

It's the rubber.. I painted it before where it was like 23 degrees outside, left it inside to dry where it was a/c. But yet after so many days of waiting, it's still sticky. I just need a solution. Hate the stickyness..

Effin rubber...

Has anyone ever tried that krylon can where paint goes out as a stone effect? Would that work?

Hm... shouldn't you use primer first then spray a layer of paint ontop of it after that?

Maybe try sanding it first?

I tried everything, still sticky after 2 years too.

I ended up just rolling the MICH in sand. It stayed where it was sticky and fell of where it wasn't.

That solved it for me.

I just looked at mine too and the paint just rubbed off after time. I suppose there is no point in painting it at all. I suppose as an alternative, you can find some tubing in the colour you want, then slice it up the middle, epoxy it to the helmet. Or just take the tubing off and leave it off.

The paint dried fine on the outer rim, but still remains sticky on the underside of the rubber rim, and the helmet was painted khaki about 2 months ago. I just used the rough scrub pad of a dish spounge and some paint thinner to clean of the underside run off.

painting over rubberized substrate will remain sticky. sometmes it does dry depending how much % rubber is in the substrate. the paint ( krylon ) and the substrate is not compatible but there is something you can do to avoid this problem. there are few more steps to make it work. you need to apply a bond coat first ( use a paint the is 100 % acrylic for best adhesion (eg exterior household paint) and let it cure under the sun for few hours.) apply a sealer ( eg alkyd / oil spray can from the paint stores.) this will prevent the krylon paint from reacting to the bond coat. apply the sealer with thin and few coats. let it dry and you can do and finish your project.
