Spetsnaz (mostly Alpha Group)

Hey everyone!
I decided that I should share my Alpha Group photos that I've been collecting, so here they are! However, only a few people that I've shared are other units from Spetsnaz (mainly the people wearing SURPAT.)

If you're interested in closeup photos of Alpha AKs, then head over to my other thread: http://airsoftcanada.com/showthread....49#post1958049

Their look and gear has drastically changed from the early 2000's for sure. However, I definitely prefer the old-school look WAY more.

If desired, I wouldn't mind doing an old-school image dump!

Jeez, the Russians are really going balls deep with the Westernized gear and equipment aren't they? Glocks, molle vests, Multicam, Ops Core helmets, low profile plate carriers, M4's.... You could barely tell them apart from Americans if it weren't for a few giveaways.

My ignorant eyes mistook for Americans. I kept thinking no way are they Russian unit (s) but I figured it was just me not knowing about modern Russian 733t opr8rs

FYI, in Russia, Ukraine, and Belarus (not sure about other eastern European countries), airsofters usually divide into 2 subcategories: light ("светлая") and dark ("тёмная") sides. The side you're on is decided by the gear you use. Dark side: NATO and western type of gear/camo/weapons. Light side: Soviet and Russian type of gear/weapons/camo (or from any other country from post-USSR space, i.e. Yugoslavia).

Airsoft teams are divided on this basis as well, however, teams reconstructing Russian 'Alfa', even though it's a Russian unit, are considered to be on the "dark" side, due to the amount of western gear and camo they use (unless the team is reconstructing 2004 and prior time frames).

I remember good old days where you go to a NATO vs Eastern Block event and play as Eastern Block you just look for NATO camouflage to shoot at... There was no "light, dark, tan, green, blue, yellow, black etc" teams. If someone decided to wear Russian made clone of US woodland and got shot by own team, well sucks to be him I guess things changed over the years.
To the OP, I still keep my SSO Gorka-E/Smersh setup for about 10 years and still like it.
There are also events happening now where there is absolutely no camo restrictions. Just like in real life, when it's not a large scale military operation. Anyone is allowed to wear whatever they choose. At times people don't even know who/how many are going against them.

Is it Western Ignorance to assume that the handful of guys with the hotshit gear are just here for the pictures and the 'old look' is still largely current, or have they really had such a dramatic rearmament?

I dunno, the PLA press releases that show off new guns/ gear where the updates only go three ranks deep are pretty great.
Then there's the DPRK's tactical tractors....

I'm willing to bet that most if not all those Multicam photos are probably from shooting competitions. If you watch videos of the FSB in action on Liveleak and such, you can see that there is still a wide variety of gear and camos used between the various operators during an OP. The gear used will also greatly vary between the different units since there is centre FSB, regional FSB etc etc.

Check these out:

Spectre sniper suits, Multicam bdu's and Mk2 chest rigs.
