Can't fix my own guns. Willing to fix yours.
|
Am I a grouchy bastard or do sellers here just not know what the words they use mean?
Ive been going through the classifieds and been infuriated over and over when I click on an ad that says "NEW IN BOX xxxxxxx" and i get in there and then it says "NEW IN BOX! Only fired a few mags through it for testing"
THATS NOT FUCKING NEW IN BOX THEN!!!!! LIKE new in box,, MAYBE, if theres absolutely no wear on the barrel and moving parts, but not new in box another "NEW IN BOX" item with its freaking barrel chopped off and painted In what goddamn world is a significantly modified gun "new in box" and no, it makes no difference whether retarded jimmy down the street cut it off with his hacksaw or it was done by the most experienced gunsmith on earth, its still not NIB http://www.nramuseum.com/gun-info-re...condition.aspx from the NRA: NEW IN BOX (NIB), or AS NEW: NIB means in the same condition as when the gun left the factory, with accompanying box, literature, and accessories. This is important to note, as older boxes may have substantial value in themselves. Purists will want the box to be the original box which that particular gun was shipped in (serial number was often penciled on the bottom or marked on the end of the box by the factory). As to the condition of the gun itself, the gun must be unfired and unused. Comparable terms expressing the same gun condition when not accompanied by box might include "AS NEW," "MINT," "PERFECT," or 100%." Even if the gun has never been fired, if the action has been worked to the extent that wear is visible, the value may be less that "NIB" or "AS NEW" to a collector. For example, the faint drag line that appears on the cylinder of a revolver that has been dry-fired a few times will reduce the value to less than "AS NEW" for a condition purist on an out of production revolver. This sort of general shop-wear to an otherwise new, current production gun will not matter to a buyer purchasing the gun to shoot. It rapidly becomes more important to a condition collector who wants a truly pristine example of an out-of-production piece. Generally this condition is seldom found in older antique guns, but an older antique gun that is NIB or AS NEW will bring substantial premium over antique Excellent condition - sometimes bringing double or more what the same model would bring in EXCELLENT condition. /grouchy rant

Technically, it's the sellers that aren't listing it correctly.
They might just be too lazy to label it LNIB - like new in box. So yea, they aren't doing it right and the OCD in me gets a little annoyed at the semantics, but then I remember it's the internet and I gotta do my own due diligence. Now, if they're labelling it as MINT and it's been taken out of the box, handled, tested, etc, and are asking for full price for it then I get annoyed... |

how do you classify items, namely accessories that have been mounted to test fit then taken off?

Depends. For me, if there's no visible wear or anything, "LNIB" is alright. Just be sure to include exactly what you did with the item. But "Tested/Fitted" is probably a more accurate tag.

LNIB = near mint condition, mounted to test fit, etc. Used = you have shot it, played with/opened up, etc |

"BNIB [___]
Never been used in game, but has been shot in my backyard a few times." "[___]. Asking $[___]. Brand new, less than a thousand rounds through it."

The best thing you can do is ask questions and make sure things are written out clearly via PM I don't bother shopping on the classified section anymore due to this very issue |

I do my best to describe what I'm selling as best as I can. Being on the receiving end of complete shit not as described (plastic vs metal, busted beyond repair...) really sucks.
the chopped painted shotty is my handywork :-/ but I can see why it makes the list for an example

I hate it when someone says they're selling a collection when it's really just an accumulation of junk.

How much sand CAN you fit in your vagina!?

New in box to me means no practical use. Got the gun, removed it from packaging to look at it, or test it's cycle, then put it back, is still new and in the box. Like new means minimal usage, or in arguably new condition, still within the original packaging. I don't expect anything on these forums to be sealed and untouched, or it would say that. I bought a pair of boots, tried them on in my living room to test the fit, placed them back in the box and sold them. To me, that's new in box.
