I watched a group of 3 guys all whom either served in the military or are currently serving. Infantry. Been in combat.

Yes they understand real firearms.

All 3 got into airsoft and first gear sold to them was GBBs. I am not talking a small amount of money either.

We are talking blow the wad thousands. Probably discussion went "we want the real deal......///...this is what you want if you want real deal"

After the 4th game they played at our field I watched one of them take a $1,300 GBB and use it as a baseball bat to beat the shit out of an old trailer. Smashed it to pieces.

Actually they left the field and sent me a text in the parking lot "we are out of this for good. Sorry man" (didn't actually see the text till later)

I saw them in the parking lot and quickly fitted them with one of my spare AEGs and a few others handed stuff over. Off to the field they went and bam...they were actually playing-shooting and having fun.

Next time I saw them they all had brand new G&Ps...and subsequently watched them clean house on the field.

Needless to say they are back.

Just an observation...

I think I will be getting another AEG for the time being. I don't know how often the dungeon master (aka my wife) will let me out to fling plastic and the thought of a 800$ GBBR (or 400$ according to her) rotting in the back of my closet makes me cringe. But an AEG might be able to survive that idle a bit better.
Speaking of numbers 800$ for a GBBR package is pretty standard price considering the mags. And you want a lot of them. Also if mags stand empty for too long you might have to reoil the seals or dned up having them leaking. Not that it take a long time to do but if you dont check that it may screw up your game. There is a few recoil AEG that are new too but I havnt tryed them yet you may want to check them up.

yeah, keep in mind while the gun is $400, 6 mags is going to cost more than the gun!

Co2 mags don't work in sub 5 C temps (the WE ones anyway, the gas ports are extremely constricted -- FACT: with same NPAS settings, etc a Co2 mag [minus the 2-3 first shots] shoots lower FPS than a propane mag)

By all accounts MAPP/Pro is the way to go in cold weather.

I know thats why I said 800$. Obviously I would tell the wife it was only 400$. I would be sleeping with that gun on the couch for a month if she found out I spent that much on airsoft.

OT I am probably going to try and pick up an AK47 AEG. I have a couple steel mags for one for some reason so might as well use em. My Hicapa slide fell a good 6 feet off a shelf and got bent so now I have no pistol either.

I was considering either an UZI or a G18 as a new side arm. Oh the choices. I can see this hobby costing me a fortune already. At any rate, thanks to all the info, I think I am going to run AEG and get a GBBR later on. I might not even get back into the sport enough to warrant more than an AEG.

There is many decent AK AEG that are not that expensive. As for uzi or G18 I've seen CO2 uzis that were too high velocity to play with be careful if you chose that option.

I'll always go to AEG, I've owned my fair share of GBBR's always end up selling em and picking back up an AEG. GBBR's are big money pits and if you dont have the funds to keep em aloft then AEG is your best bet.

I always broke it down like this:

AEG + Mags = $250-300 gun + $60-$80 10 mags
GBBR + Mags = $300-$500 gun + $400 10 mags

Polar* is an option if you want to save money on mags, but then you have to buy a HPA tank and the kit itself costs $550-$700 depending where you get it from.

P*/DG is roughly the same
Kit - $500-550 for the kit.
HPA Tanks - $40-250
Regulator - $100-150
Body - ???

Only real benefits is that you can run AEG magazines, and have crazy trigger response (P*) and constant awesome recoil (DG).

You can find decent GBBR and AEG's on ASC, just gotta find the right one that suits you! Pretty sure you can find what you are looking for under $800 for both.

but why do GGBRs fail where paintball markers can be so reliable?

HPA vs liquid to gas propusion... HPA is very stable regardless of ambient temperature.

I would think because of the propellant being used.

My take on this:

I think paintball guns mechanism are much much simpler and have almost none to 0 moving parts (not sure about the mag red ones though).

Their simpler form make them easier to manufacture, thus less expensive meaning manufacturers don't have to cut on materials as much.

I might be wrong but I don't think paintball guns use pot metal like Airsoft guns, and I'd be tempted to think this is the main source of problems we have
