vest in washing machine to dull down colour?

Hey everyone,

I bought a vest last summer that was suppose to be OD, but its more bright green than olive I think...

anyways, I was thinking about putting it in the washing machine to dull down the colour. Thoughts? is this an ok idea? will any of the velcro get ruined or anything like that?

this is the one

Thanks guys

(btw I was going to post this in the FAQ section but I am prohibited from posting threads in that section for some reason)

You'd probably be better off by dying it with fabric dye.

I've thrown items of web gear into the wash with regular detergent. It came out clean, but the colour didn't fade. You have to be sure not to wash camouflage clothing with regular detergent - that will quickly fade.

I dry clean my vests.

If you want to fade it, put in bright sunlight. The natural UV will fade it.

toss it in a public pool. The Chlorine will give it a stone wash.

Cordura nylon does NOT take dye. It may react to bleach or detergents.

Fading in dyed nylon occurs due to UV exposure.
Either paint or dirt are your best options. OR...do like the rest of us who got something other then what we really wanted......sell it and start again...LOL

I go crazy with 3 or 4 different colors of camo krylon, then I drag it through the dirt/mud for a while. I also, and here is the kicker to really getting your gear looking used/faded... I use the gear, and crawl through what ever ( I had the awsome fortune of crawling through dog some kind of animal shit one game... not fun, one of the few times I actually washed my gear lol... after most games when I get home I just wipe off the dirt/mud/leaves whatever with my hand... works like a charm!

yeah Im not worried about getting dirty, I love crawling around in the dirt. But actually spray painting a vest? really? that works? I think Id sooner sell it off then risk ruining it with spray paint no?...

leaving it out in the sun sounds easy enough, I can put it out on the clothesline outside untill spring gets here, would that do the trick?

I've actually spray dusted tons of my old vests, just get a shade darker in paint than the actual colour of the vest. Just hold the can further away because if you get too close the paint will spread and blotch out.

I say the best bet is to spray paint it, then take it out in your back yard and stomp on it - just watch any buckles.

leaving it in the sun to fade will work...but then you have exposure to other elements which can be harmful to the vest....depending on the quality. Unless you are totally in love with your vest and it is the only vest for you....then I suggest to just get a new vest...lol
