While the US/ NATO guys are neat and all, I think the character designs for the Russians are 'cooler'.

It's odd how the characterization has a psychological effect on my game as well; when I play US I tend to think more and take my time, whereas when playing Russian I'm more an embodiment of 'RAAAWWWWWRRRGGGHH BANG BANG BANG'.
Human brains are funny things.

I'm also amused by how 'Airsoft lol' BF3's character design is. They are definitely a fair departure from reality, but all the 'loadouts' are pretty standard examples of what makes sense for a skirmish, and what tacticlol dorks like us think is neato.

The joke gets even better when we observe that some people would think less of a guy for showing up dressed as a video game character, when they'd probably be praised for putting together some good functional kit if BF3 didn't exist.

This isn't high school, people don't really care what you wear.... Don't worry about meeting other people's standards, make your own for yourself

My only small gripe is that if your a wealthy developer like EA/DICE, wouldn't you do a better job of emulating the gear used by the armies portrayed? Don't they have researchers? Why the hell is the Russian assault class wearing an american-made MICH helmet and what looks like an RAV... the Russian engineer also kinda bugs me... a gasmask? really? Finding information on the proper gear used by armies, especially big ones like Russia isn't difficult.

IF BF3 was mod-capable at all, I'd hope someone would release a replacement pack with legit gear configs.

Well these are general kits. I think if you take a look at some kits that the NPC's had during the campaign they were a little bit more accurate.

I think part of their decision making with regard to kit is that they didn't want to closely imitate real armies.

Battlefield kind of exists in it's own little universe; the game has elements that look like realism, but they're not at all 'realistic', so they built up the art direction to reflect the core gameplay.
I liked BF2 a lot, and it's character design was a fair bit more realistic, but that illusion was destroyed when somebody got hit by an explosive and abruptly flew off flopping like a toy. If the character design was a bit more free-wheeling, the silly ragdolls and sniper rifles making people fly 10ft would have been less 'goofy' and more 'hilarious'.
I think the play is fun, and the design looks fun, and I'd love to see some guys pulling BF3 impressions.
I may do a Russian LMG gunner, but those helmets are like $500 and weigh like 15 pounds.

Najohn: I agree.

Its not as pricey as you think. Replicas of the Maska and Altyn helmets exist and cost much less than the price of the real versions and weigh less for sure.

The Red-Alliance forums would be your best bet. I see these replica helmets as well as real Ruskie body armour being sold all the time.

Funny thing is my chest rig is very similar to the the US support soldier, which is also my favourite kit to use (with the M249 w/ PK-AS, foregrip, and extended mags)!

They had pretty accurate kit in the single player campaign. In multiplayer however, it's very important to have distinctive designs for each class and team for gameplay purposes. One glance and you can tell exactly what class someone is playing.

Replica MASHKA's are about $200.

If you dont want to spend that much then there is another option. I am building my own and if you can find a good cheap riot helmet that are ALMOST exactly the same and they come with a face sheild. Only picture i have of it, is...

Gotta love those ragdoll graphics when you hit a player with the tank rounds. It definitely was more on the artistic high-end graphics feel.

I only checked their gear because the US Recon has the same vest I use lol.
