Apparently its designed to shoot down helicopters.

The shape and size would actually be practical for that I guess

It's not meant for long range, this is meant more for mid range high stopping power/anti material were the M82A1/M107 is two long to be easily used.
Same goes for firing prone.

And I believe this might be Ronnie Barrett son, I don't remember his name.

Ronnie Barrett has understandably shot a great deal of ammunition through the M82A2, and can lay down a withering rapid-fire barrage with it. 'I found it balances very well, and the red dot sight is great for snap-shooting. When we tried this gun in the desert some years before, a helicopter temptingly flew across my front, but I decided to spare it.'"
all except very few pictures are ronnie barrett firing it

Why carry around a high powered rifle, when for the same weight you could carry around grenades with ROCKETS on them!

Let's see, why would you want a rifle over a rocket launcher. How about higher rate of fire, and smaller signature.

The real hitch is when does the US plan to fight someone with functioning air support?

Well, try air support in a valley full of unstable rocks with your troops on the bottom... baaaaad idea.
Same goes in urban warfare : if you give a shit about collateral , RPGs are not the best thing ever.

The whole idea is that with a red-dot sight, it gives you quick snap targeting and the ability to fire several rounds in quick succession.

I actually can see it being kind of useful.

Is it me or is his front grip an AR pistol grip mounted backwards?
