Old school airsofter considering GBBR - questions about FPS, reliability.

Hey folks,

Considering grabbing a GBBR for the upcoming season, but also to practice ( for a canuck, it's as close as I'll get ) some run and gun courses of fire on my property.

Years ago (8-9) GBBR's were ( as I saw it ) very much a luxury item and many saw lots of frustrating technical problems. Have these issues been basically ironed out?

FPS limits used to be set at a hard 300. Basically all of these shoot at 400-445ish out of the box. How would I go about dialing that down?

Off the shelf, will major manufacturers GBBR units be good to go?

What kind of maintenance is required for these units?

Looking at the WE 416 as it's closest to my RS AR, any outstanding issues I should know about?

Basic maintenance hasn't changed, they still need to be cleaned regularly, etc. Quality and variety are up, as well as upgrade parts available. Check out companies like RA-Tech. Buy a gun with an NPAS valve to change the flow and drop velocity to where you need. They are still affected by temperature, which I do t think is going to change, but many will work in slightly colder or hotter temps, you just have to watch for temp swing.

If your going for a gas gun, I would recommend a GHK as the modding community and in general has a good aftermarket support and good stock performance.

If you don't care about performance and reliability as much;

The WE M4's and 416s are the closest to "1:1" and will accept most RS parts, obviously the top is a ViperTech but those cost the same prices as the real thing.

GHK is a great platform, with great reliability and cool-down; unfortunately not all RS parts will fit on it in my experience.

WE's rifles are good for the most part, their down fall is their magazines. (Cool down and their poor performance in colder weather.) The Canadian mark up is also rape on these rifles, to the point where if you spent a little more for retail, you'd be better off with a GHK.

GHK is the best OOTB IMO; parts are dirt cheap from samoon (replacement parts whenever you need them); front cost will cost you a bit, but they are importable with their stock FPS at 380-400 (10.5-14.5"+)

GHK has a 1J nozzle, which brings you down to 350-360 FPS; WE can use a "FG" disc, or an NPAS which you can dial respectively, but users all over have inconsistent FPS issues with the NPAS.

Maintenance is the same all GBBs; keep the clean after use, and keep them semi lubed with silicoin oil; and keep the mags filled with a little bit of GG.

Unfortunately, GBBS are all wear and tear, so at some point you will have to replace parts, and o-rings.

I have the WE 416 and it's a very nice gun. Takes most RS accessories you can find, and shoots great, even in cold (of course, cold here in Portugal is not the same thing as cold in Canada...). Some things you need to consider with any GBBR: shoot slower (they don't like full-auto), get a good hop rubber (works wonders) and keep it clean and lubed (just like your RS).
Enjoy it.

+1 on KWA MP7. The fire selector should read: Safe-Semi-Silly Grin mode

Check out Action Air Canada in Mississauga. They deal with mostly GBBRs especially GHKs.

GHK G5+SRU kit = very very very fun GBBR.

They carry T-NT stuff too if you ever need to upgrade your GBBRs.
