Electronic gurus, I need your help

I am organizing a game (terminator wars) where some devices need to be found. I would like to put a low power transmitter in each of those devices and have some kind of detector beeping when it get close to a transmitter (the closer the faster the beep) or something similar.

My fallback is to use a key finder devices, but with these it is the emitters that beeps which is not optimal for my game.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Or if you want actual location (rather than hot & cold) you could use a chirp.

Of course, you would need handful of compatible Garmin GPS units as well...
