Tournament or Event FPS for GBBRs

I always wondered this, but most events posted or advertised here give the general FPS of AEGs and snipers. Being a GBBR guy and the rest of my squad, what do we follow? The same as the AEGs?

In general practice you should follow the same rules as AEGs. But AEGs don't lose FPS at the same rate that GBBRs do when using heavier BBs, and therefore have a higher Joule rating that AEGs.

Truthfully, you should be working out the joules you're firing.

So if the limit is 400fps with .20g bbs for AEGs.

You can fire 400fps with .20g bbs, or if you're using heavier BBs:

Using the chart above, you can see that a gun shooting 400FPS with .20g have a joule rating of 1.49.

If your gbbr shoots 400fps with .20g, but 370 with .30g, you're joule rating with .30g is: 1.91... much higher. Compare this to an AEG which shoots 400FPS with .20g, it might fire 330ish FPS on .30g, which is around 1.43 joules.

Regardless of what you (or any other player) thinks....it's up to the host/organizer of the game. What they say goes...how/why/whatever system they come up with is the final say.

What you can do to be prepared for this is:
- know the characteristics of your gun/BB's/propellant/etc...
- know how to effect the changes that are needed for the game conditions

The way and the level of detail that hosts oversee the chrony/power/FPS of the players is all over the place.

Some don't check anything...and some won't check (or even have the capability to check) even if there's a complaint.

Some run everyone, with every gun they're going to use, through a chrony process...and have in-game spot checks...and track/record who's chronied at what.

And there's probably every variation inbetween those two levels out there.

Know your system...know how to change it...ensure that you meet the guidelines that the Host/organizer puts out there. If you have a question...ask that specific host for that specific game. Don't assume it's the same for everything out there.

Ok. Im also to assume that using heavier bbs for more accuracy (I've noticed my 416 runs horribly with .20 but better with .28) also is to the host's discretion?

Usually game hosts post the rules in the game thread. If there are no rules with regards to FPS/Joules, then ask the host. As it was said above, don't assume anything, and know your gun. If you're super paranoid about it, go buy a chrony and find out how hard your gun is shooting and make it friendly.

Shelledpants has tons of hands on experience with hosting and the logistics etc... make note of what he's said.

Re. the selection of BBs...again, you'll find hosts/games all over the map with this.

What you'll find will be something like this in the event post:
- FPS limits are set...and maybe a BB weight is specified. You can make the reasonable assumption that this is with 0.20g BBs if it is not specified.
*eg*
MAX FPS is 400fps w/ 0.20's
or
AEG Max FPS = 400fps
--- so they want you to be under that FPS with that weight of BB....but don't care what weight you shoot for the game

- FPS limits are set...and BB weights are specified
*eg*
Max FPS is 350fps...0.20's only
--- so they want you to be under that FPS...AND you must use that weight of BB

As before...hosts are all over the map with things.

Some will simply ask you what you have loaded and then get you to chrony. They might have limits set for different BB weights (i.e. if you're say you're shooting 0.30's...they may want to see a max of 350fps).

Some will get you to line up to chrony with an empty mag...they'll have one of their guys load some 0.20's into your mag and then you'll chrony.

General rule of thumb...know what your gun shoots at with 0.20's (even if you're never going to use them in game play). Use whatever weight you want for actual game play...unless it's specified by the host.

Again...read the game/event thread carefully. They're often updated as questions are answered. If you have a question ask...don't wait until game day to figure it out at the chrony station.

Having a chrony to test things as you change this or that prepping for a game is really handy and well worth the money.

As a somewhat new person to airsoft(about a year in) this is something that really requires more effort than most people put into this. I know some lax fields will just allow you to bring any guns with a 400fps limit but wont check or do poor checks so people think that they do not have to find out their fps. There are many guns that will be hot for cqb environments right out of the box, and in the case of gas guns, can potentially be well above outdoor limits. Just because you werent checked doesnt give you an excuse when you do some serious damage to someone.

Gas guns not only have different charecteristics with different bb weights, but they also can be greatly affected by weather and the amount of gas you have in your resevoir. Ensure that when you chrono that you have a full fill of gas to ensure that your maximum possible fps is recorded. If the temperature heats up, your fps may also increase. If you go play on a cold morning and you are just below fps limits you may go over once it starts to warm up.

Its your responsibility to ensure you are not hurting someone, you can only have fun if everyone is safe.

just a horror story from my paintball experience that ensured I picked up a good airsoft chronograph(that can also handle different weights). I was at a field and a kid who didnt know his gun well showed up. Took a shot at someone and it punched through BOTH sides of his hopper(hard plastic filled with paintballs, it would have broken a clear airsoft gun easy) because he screwed with his gun and didnt care how it affected others. We chrono'd it and the average was about 615 fps....

I'm guessing the kid wasn't allowed to play. Simply this is why I don't like the idea of new players using sniper style platforms and FPS it just can lead to too many problems.
