Classic Army and Tokyo Marui are good choices for an AUG. CA has slightly better externals, whereas TM wins in the internals.

However with your requirement for a tough rifle, I don't think you can go wrong with a Type 97/97B. I've handled one and they are really solid both internally and externally. A Type 56-1 with the stock folded is even more compact. Handled one of those too and its a real beast.
You may like the G&G F2000 as well. I had one and it was a solid, compact bullpup.
