Airsoft / Clearsoft - Long Term Reliability Study

When you decide to enter the world of Airsoft in 2007, you're confronted with a plethora of choices. What used to be a simple decision is now confounded by dozens of manufacturers and products. In addition, there seems to be no clear answer as to which of the various options best suits your needs as debates regarding the various makes and models and their quality abound. Is it better to buy a Tokyo Marui gun, or will a cheaper model suit your needs? Has the quality of the less popular/less expensive manufacturers improved, and how do they perform over the long run?

This post will attempt to answer that question with your help.

The concept is to track the owners of various makes and models of weapons and the performance of said models on a few key points. These are recorded over the long term and posted here in order to help individuals make informed decisions about the guns they intend to purchase.

The key points are as follows:
1) Manufacturer, Model Name (name of weapon on box, and weapon replicated if different from model name)
-
2) Date Obtained
-
3) Initial Cost
-
4) New or Used
-
5) Mechanical Problems (Gearbox issues, hopup issues.. basically functional performance related -- supply date of issue)
-
6) Esthetic Problems (Paint damage, cracks in body, loose parts.. physical construction related -- supply date of issue)
-
7) Rounds fired between failures (think how many bags of BB's used before it failed. If no failure, list rounds fired up to this point)
-
8) Changes to Internals and Externals (upgrades, mods, dates)
-
9) Resale Date and Value if applicable.
-
10)Notes and Comments (Optional)
-

***THE IMPORTANT NOTES/RULES FOR SUBMISSION***
1) You may only submit information for a gun YOU OWN personally. No 'friend of friend' second hand information
2) ONLY MAKE ONE POST, and edit it to update your information.
3) This is open to ANYONE who owns a gun, and I specifically encourage individuals with 'clearsoft' or less well known manufacturers (Well, CYMA) to participate.
4) Please remember you are contributing FACTS about your gun. If you have any opinions on it, please state them in point 10 only. Only put in esthetic/performance related issues if it malfunctioned (something broke, wobbly, etc). If it doesn't shoot fast enough out of the box, that's an opinion and should be stated in point 10.

I've had a few requests to add information into the product conclusions in the next post. Most specifically, add in the selling price. I would consider this but since most of the guns are selling after modifications, an average price wouldn't be very accurate. If you're looking to see the market value of a specific gun, take a look at the various reports for each weapon to see which one matches what you're looking for / what you have. Keep in mind that prices can fluctuate with time as well. The price of a gun sold 3 years ago might not be the price of it now.

GENERAL CONCLUSIONS DRAWN FROM RESPONSES
1) Common well known brand names (Tokyo Marui, KJW...) have higher resale value than those of their less-well known counterparts (Crossman, Daisy...). Investing in a known brand name gun will likely result in you recouperating ~85-90% of its original value. Less-well known brand names on average will result in a 50% recouperation of investment.

1) Manufacturer, Model Name
Crosman Stinger something or other. Looks like a SPAS 12 pump action.
2) Date Obtained
Sometime during the spring of 2005
3) Initial Cost
About $100
4) New or Used
Brand spanking new
5) Mechanical Problems (Gearbox issues, hopup issues.. basically functional performance related)
None that I can remember. If there were, I fixed them cause it still works.
6) Esthetic Problems (Paint damage, cracks in body, loose parts.. physical construction related)
The top of the heatshield had a crack running down it from front to back. That was mostly my fault from modding in a front sling swivel.
7) Rounds fired between failures (think how many bags of BB's used before it failed)
A shitload, I don't even remember.
8) Changes to Internals (upgrades, dates)
Opened it and streched the spring by hand the day after I got it.
9) Resale Date and Value if applicable.
I'm never selling, it was my first anything that fired a pellet. If I were to, it'd probably go for about $20

6) Esthetic Problems (Paint damage, cracks in body, loose parts.. physical construction related)Magazine lips began to wear down and would only hold 15 of 20 BBs reliably.
Slide got a large crack after being thrown like a baseball at a stone fireplace. Still worked and crack did not increase with careful use.
7) Rounds fired between failures (think how many bags of BB's used before it failed)
10,000-12,000
8) Changes to Internals (upgrades, dates)
Oiled with silicone oil and Super Lube. Didn't help much. (around 2000rnds)
9) Resale Date and Value if applicable.
Summer of 2006. $15.

Bravo One-Six April 6th, 2007 11:03

Coma, could you get the model name/number from a website or something? I'd like to make sure that we're documenting specific models so that we can see if specific items have specific flaws/issues.

Also, we need estimates for the number of rounds fired (think bags of bb's used as it gives you a better idea). Only post resale info if you have sold it, that way we can get an accurate idea of depreciation of the gun.

Bravo One-Six April 6th, 2007 11:04

Also guys, please give dates (at least the year) that the issues with esthetics or fuction occured. We need to be able to get an idea of how long the weapon held out.

- Gears stripped and tappet plate broke (after maybe a total of 700 rounds)
- Replacement gear stripped (while being tested by a Gun Doc)
- Piston stripped along with it
6) Esthetic Problems (Paint damage, cracks in body, loose parts.. physical construction related)
Front sight broke during shipping.
7) Rounds fired between failures (think how many bags of BB's used before it failed)
Which one?
Original gears stripped after maybe 200 test fire. Replacement Gears and piston stripped after maybe after 50 rounds at the Gun Doc. (Not 100% sure)
8) Changes to Internals (upgrades, dates)
PGC Metal Gearbox (came like that used)
Guarder gears set with new STAR M249 tappet plate (replacement for the replacement gears)
Guarder polycarb piston (replacement for the stripped piston)
M100 Spring (2 weeks ago after the mechbox was rebuilt with the above parts)

10) Additional Notes
-- To potential Frame purchasers, left hand side of frame DOES NOT have threading, this has occurred -- on two Guarder Frame and Slide Kits and I am unsure if other production Frames suffer from this -- issue.
-- There are issues with the Guarder hammer spring that prevent usage, opening for hammer is too large -- and prevents proper function. That is however, a Guarder issue not a TM problem.
11) Fixed Issues
-- Slide does not lock back 100% when magazine empty, likely due to propane use on plastic slide.
-- Problem no longer occurs after the upgrade to a Guarder Metal Slide

Will update as issues occur

5) Mechanical Problems
no real "issues" it was underpowered
6) Esthetic Problems
after takeing it apart numerous times screw holes began stripping out. the takedown was poorly thought out, gun splits in halfs, the susat was just a "1X" lens with a red led, it actually worked tho. body was not made of the greatest plastic, light, flimsy.
7) Rounds fired between failures
n/a gun problems due to my modifications, not manufacturers construction
8) Changes to Internals (upgrades, dates)
i installed complete famas internals (everything but hte shell) may06 (which was unneccissary, a spring would have done just as well, as the gears and piston, motor were of good construction, i was just being careful) the famas motor didnt fit properly, which ended up causing a wack of problems down the road. it was wider than the stock motor so it cause the body to sit apart slightly which led to contact problems. also the required battery to run the new internals was too big to fit in the battery holder properly as it was designed only for a 7.2V.
9) Resale Date and Value if applicable.
march 06 $375
10) Optional - Notes and Comments
the gun was actually a good gun, despite its reputation. for anyone who is looking to get an l85 but doesnt want the 1k price tag of a star (g&g, ca ones not released yet) its actually is a good rifle. as i found the internals were of good construction, even had metal bushings. all you need to do to make it gameable is replace the spring, you dont wanna go too big tho, getting an 8.4V in the housing requires quite a bit of modding.

non to speak of really. found it does have the same fireing characteristics of a famas where you have to pull the trigger fully and release fully, you cant hal cock it like you could with an ar or the rifle jams and you need to switch to full, of hit the spring release to remedy. i dont see that as a problem with the gun, more so the habits of the user. march 31

Yes I've owned 4 P226's, all Marui's.

I didn't include all the other custom P226's I've built for people (all with the Marui P226), I know they haven't seen any failures yet with propane use, and some see very regular use.

1) Manufacturer, Model Name
Classic Army CA36 (G36 full size)
2) Date Obtained
Feburary 2007
3) Initial Cost
Gun + battery and 50rd mag $680
4) New or Used
New
5) Mechanical Problems (Gearbox issues, hopup issues.. basically functional performance related)
Trigger contacts in mechbox separated, causing gun to stop firing. Probably after around 3,000-4,000 rounds.
Piston Head Seal went after about 18,000 rounds.
6) Esthetic Problems (Paint damage, cracks in body, loose parts.. physical construction related)
Cocking swivel lever extremly easy to break. -replaced with CA steel lever.
Foregrip pin falls out easily (fixed by threading it and holding it on with a screw)
7) Rounds fired between failures (think how many bags of BB's used before it failed)
4,000-ish before I had to fix the trigger contacts. Some other electrical issues (too much damned wire). Fired probably 15,000+ rounds through the gun.
8) Changes to Internals (upgrades, dates)
6.04mm Classic Army High Precision Barrel -May 10th. This was removed in September because CA tightbores suck. The gun in more accurate with the stock barrel.
MS100SP Spring -September 12th
Guarder Bearing Spring Guide -Sept 12th
9) Resale Date and Value if applicable.
Still hanging onto this thing, probably will for a long time yet to come!
10) Optional - Notes and Comments
This gun is made out of glass fiber, and is very, very solid. No flex or creak in the body. Lightweight and other than what was mentioned above very durable. The export sight (1.5x) has very poor eye relief and is hard to use with goggles. Replaced with SL8 rail, much better. Overall this is a great gun.

6) Esthetic Problems (Paint damage, cracks in body, loose parts.. physical construction related)
The FA-MAS itself is creaky by default, easily fixed with some tape. The gun is completely solid though.
7) Rounds fired between failures (think how many bags of BB's used before it failed)
Close to 2,500 since I've owned it, no failures yet.
8) Changes to Internals (upgrades, dates)
Upgraded spring (120%, 330fps), Upgraded bushings
9) Resale Date and Value if applicable.
I bought it used for $450-ish. Sold for $400 November, 2007.
10) Optional - Notes and Comments
A lot of people complain about this gun being too creaky (which seems to make people think it's fragile) and about the old mechbox being unupgradable. The creaking IS NOT that bad and is easily fixed with some tape. I elemintated 90% of the creaking on mine. The gun IS durable, made out of strong ABS. The V1 mechbox is a tank, with an insane rate of fire. This gun is mildely upgraded and competes well.

Jammed once. Never happened again. (March 2007)
Gun does not have a stabilizer o-ring, so it originally did not fire straight.

Second Airsoft gun, and I'm very happy with it. It's very heavy (full-metal) and powerful.
Seems that the hopup on the lowest setting is still making bb's fly a tiny bit upwards. Perhaps BB's heavier than .20 would help that.
EDIT: Heavier BB's do help

1) Tokyo Marui Beretta M9 Tactical Master

2) Date Obtained: I think it was fall 2000.

3) Initial Cost: $220

4) Used

5) Mechanical Problems: 1-After a few years use, the gun tended to vent gas horribly when I was using duster. Switched to propane and the gun works perfectly again. 2-Slide lock notch wore out fairly early on so the slide no longer locks back when the mag is empty. 3-After many thousands of rounds, the trigger spring broke. Replaced with a realsteel spring.

6) Esthetic Problems: Just the lack of locking slide

7) Rounds fired between failures: This gun has had thousands of rounds through it. My first season was almost exclusively played with the GBB. The slide lock wore out within 1000 rounds of when I got it, but I don't know how much the previous owner used the gun.

8) Changes to Internals: Changed the small springs out when one of them snapped. 2005.

6) Esthetic Problems

--magwell separates slightly (related to but not the sole cause of the mag wobble)
7) Rounds Fired Between Failures
--probably 16000 rounds before the motor had to be tightened
8) Changes to Internals: none
-- Added low mount
9) Resale Date and Value
-- N/A
10)Notes:
--have been using 3300 8.4v the whole time

1) Make and Model
-- Crosman Stinger R30 (Old version without metal reinforcement)http://www.airsoftcanada.com/attachm...achmentid=3645
2) Date Purchased
-- July 2004
3) Cost
-- $50
4) New/Used?
-- New
5) Mechanical Problems
-- the trigger mechanism was defective right out of the box, had to mod it in order to get the thing to shoot
-- the plastic of the whole gun was so cheap, putting the screws back chipped and cracked the plastic.
-- didnt knew anything about airsoft at that time so i took the spring that was in the front and twisted it inside the other one(the spring that pushes the piston). the increased pression made the dual spring and spring guide pass throug the rear of the gun(while it was laying alone on a table, eard a bang then look on the table to see the spring and spring guide 2 feet behind the gun itself with bits of broken plastic everywhere)
6) Esthetic Problems
-- again due to the cheap plastic it was creaking like someone walking on dry leaves
-- its a clearsoft (being clear was a problem by itself)
7) Rounds Fired Between Failures
-- maybe 100 before it exploded
8i) Changes to Internals
-- doubled the spring (like 4 days after getting the gun)
-- removed the weight in the foregrip
8ii) Changes to Externals
-- none
9) Resale Date and Value
-- July 2004 sold it to the nearest trashcan for the cost of the calories it took for throwing it in, let's say 25 calories
10)end word
-- is there really a good point about that gun, exept the fact that it didnt exploded WHILE i was using it? DON'T EVER BUY CROSSMAN ,here's the link to that shit
http://www.compasseco.com/index.php?...10&prevstart=0

WE HiCapa Dragon— 1st release/v1a

1) Make & Model
— WE (Wei-E-Tech) 5.1 HiCapa Dragon v1

2) Date Obtained
— December 2005

3) Initial Cost
— $180

4) New or Used
— New from HK

5) Mechanical Problems
— Outer barrel is 2 piece and held together by friction, comes flying out once in a while if not afixed together. Grip safety is fairly sensitive, can interrupt firing.

6) Esthetic Problems
— Split slide front is held by one small hex screw, constantly needs tightening. Cheap metals, some pitting but overall finish is nice.

7) Rounds fired between failures
— 1000s.

8) Changes to Internals and Externals (upgrades, mods, dates)
— N/A Is green gas ready out of the box

9) Resale Date and Value if applicable.
— N/A
-
10) Notes and Comments
— This was my first real airsoft gun, bought it for CQB at TTAC3, and it saw alot of action. After about 4-5 months of constant use (6-8k bbs) the gun stopped locking back because the soft Zinc mixed slide was wearing, and the nozzle block started to stick. I removed a damaged spring in the block and was back in action for a couple more months before the internals failed. Basically the cheap metals in the hammer/firing area had lots of worn down parts and the chasis part was cracked right through. To repair the gun I'll be ordering a complete hammer section and new nozzle from www.cobraairsoft.com when back in stock. I recommend buying the TM 5.1 instead and upgrading with quality metal parts.
