My first Vietnam infantry impression

I was going for a 1967-68 rifleman load out, but I still need jungle boots and a proper insignia. The one I have is like a shiny colorful target on my arm.

Nice start.

Sky Soldier should put on his M1C Helmet though.

The PAVN in the Central Highlands are going to shower you with Type 36 and B-40's.

Borealis March 20th, 2012 22:54

You mean this. ;)

In fact 1966 was the first year when the army started issuing OD insignias, but it wasn't before 1967 that all the men had one (officially).

But you're right, some units where very reluctant to give up their «colors» and semi-officially never made the transition. The cavalry and airborne divisions where the most difficult to convince and my unit, the 173d airborne, was one of those with the 101st and 82d.

Thanks, you made me look at the history of my unit with more details. Now I know that I'm period correct. :)

Not a lot of guys would rock their flashlight on the harness, either. During the day it would reflect light off the lens as well as make more rattle noise.

Keep on keepin' on!! Join us on the HAA, we welcome all Canadian historical airsofters :)

Looks good dude. Need an M56 compass pouch though "omg anachronism!!". You're going to give jay forbes a stroke!

Looking pretty sweet Borealis!

Yeah my only real quibble would be the lack of helmet (who WOULDN'T want to wear the iconic M1 steel pot for a Nam G.I impression?! weird....:D)

Borealis May 13th, 2012 00:54

I've got a real VN M1 (look 6 posts upward), but I wanted to know how I looked with a Boonie hat.
I saw a lot of period photos of soldiers "relaxing" at the base camp with headcaps or boonie hats, so I wanted one in my kit.

p.s.: I think I look like a dork with the boonie, I don't think I'm gonna use it. :)
