Here's an interesting National Geographic segment on Force Recon.

Training before deployment etc. Shows nice shots of kit and weapons.

Five parts.

Hey all, just finished watching the documentary (thanks for posting it btw)
and noticed something:

Part 5, time at 4:46, the guys missing the heat shield/hand guard on his rifle. Any ideas/explanations? Actually, when you look closer, I don't see a gas tube either. Airsoft maybe?

There is the Goretex jackets, but as a hardshell these are not that breathable and are often kinda noisy when you move in them... does the Marines, and more specifically Force Recon and MARSOC units use the PCU or a similar garment? I've never seen any pic of such been used, so I'm clueless.

AFAIK the current USMC issued 7.62 DMR platform is the Mk11 Mod 0... Does anyone knows if the M110 will replace it in the short time?

I'm interested in getting a DMR, possibly as a winter project for next year, and M110s are damn sexy lol...

The mk11 mod 0 is a NAVSPECWAR designation, and may only be available to the U.S. Army in limited use.

All indications show that the U.S. Army has already taken on the SASS as their preferred semi-automatic precision shooting platform:

According to this, the Mk11 Mod0 is also issued to USMC, and M110 is exclusive to the Army. I think^^

That's correct, the Mk11 Mod0 is Marine Corp, and is classified through the Naval Special Warfare Development Group.

A limited number (180) of a hybrid of the Mk11 and M110 were purchased by the USMC a few years ago (long before the M110 was actually adopted by the Army) and carries the unofficial designation Mk11 Mod 1; it consists of a Mk11 with a M110 upper so it looks like an M110 but doesn't feature the adjustable stock or ambi controls.

A modified version of the the M110 is being used by the Navy and Marine Corps (they're buying them as different kits, including different scopes) under the designation Mk11 Mod 2. AFAIK the only difference from the M110 is the use a M84 Gasbuster style charging handle.

The Mk11 Mod 2 purportedly began service with 26MEU in the summer of 2006.

A limited number of leftover Mk11 Mod 1s were recently released for civilian sales; this was a sell sheet for it:

@Conker: if you're doing DMR, keep in mind they're also using the M39 EMR as a replacement for the DMR. The Mk11 seems to be more for spotters and situations where a suppressed rifle is desired.

DMR = Designated Marksman Rifle
EMR = Enhanced Marksman Rifle

Whats the difference?

Both are based off the M14, the DMR is a full size rifle (like the M21) and the M39 EMR is similar to the M14 EBR/Navy Mk14 Mod 0. The EMR is replacing the DMR. Ballistically its the same rifle, it's just more compact, adjustable and has more rail-estate. And as with the EBR it can accept most Remington 870 stocks/adapters.
