Why carry around a 40lb sniper rifle when a 12lb sniper rifle with kill the guy just as dead?
LOL, it's not that bad when you're 6'3" and use to lugging that weigh of crap around.......but it's so 'l337, plus the adjustable fps, and all that jazz. But you are absolutely right, this is airsoft, where there is no need to crack engine blocks at a mile and a half, or look like we can. We just have to hit a target with a 6mm BB and it doesn't matter what got it there.

I actually often play with my rifle like i do in video games. Is more something I realized after many years of playing hard with my sniper rifle on my back, working with my team via comms, and doing very well. Sure I spent most of my days with my MP5 as my primary, and a pistol or two as well, but my rifle gets used LOTS, all a matter of the situation. I've played urban areas with the same set up, and I find it much more fun to just go with a pistol and my rifle (BA rifle that is) and grab lots of kills. Was mid last year I realized that one can play the game like one would in a video game, but one can't use the video game as a sure means to get good on the field.

Me with just my M24 and Mk23 at an uban type field:

And don't freak out about how much Amos spent, he bought top notch parts and spent a lot tuning hs rifle, much more than most will do. Parts in my M24, I'd say I have maybe $500 into it. Many of the most skilled snipers set their rifles up for consistancy and accuracy, run heavy BBs and know that range is easily accomplished by compensating for elevation, it isn't a result of just having a high velocity. For a few years I ran my M24 at around 500fps w/.2g BBs, and used 0.30g BBs. Last year I downgraded the velocity to 400fps and went with 0.36g BBs, and I think I'll stick with it, my rifle shoots straight and consistantly every time. Sure my rounds might drop around 150ft away, but elevate some and 200ft+ is easy.

And what Fox said about a stock rifle shooting as well as a springer is false, a springer pistol might net you 60ft range, a stock rifle would get you double that if you used higher than 0.25g BB weight.

sniper rifles are a question of style not performance. My aeg has more range and accuracy than most of the highly upgraded "sniper rifles" out there

LOL...Vod, you are in the same classification as Memmel. That being a freak of nature that just seems to be able to consistently do the seemingly impossible with an AEG...you comment doesn't count. LOL

I have yet to find a way to make my aeg as quiet as my BA..... next challenge...

The real secret lies in understanding that higher FPS does NOT automaticaly equal more range or accuracy.

I could afford to spend $$$$ on building a top level sniper rifle...or spend that and more and buy or have someone build me one. If I thought it was what I wanted to do...then I'd do it.

So...money isn't the particular barrier for me, re. using/buying a sniper rifle.

And it's not that they're not technically interesting rifles either. The mechanics are simple but elegant in their own right...they can be tweaked/tuned/adjusted. I'm an accuracy nut and like to fiddle with things...so that's all good there.

So...the technical interest/viability isn't a barrier for me either.

Power...IMHO, is a misnomer. I've played at several "hot" games, I've been allowed to shoot "hot" on occasion. That comes with being reliable and diligent. But, again IMHO, I've not really seen the need for it. In general, there's not that much advantage to be had to be able to shoot 50-100fps harder than the next guy. Also, I shoot with buddies (if I'm not on their team this game, I'll probably be on their team the next)...and am not really out to hurt them. A hit with a mouse-fart of a shot is the same kill as a sub-dermal bleeder....with the exception that no one laughs about the latter when you're chit-chatting after the game.

I do agree that a bolt action rifle that's in a real sweet spot is nice to use and is quieter than any AEG. But a snipers role isn't all about shooting at every target.

So...what's really put the issue of sniper rifle or not to bed for me is this:

For airsoft, I really like assualting and getting into the heat of a firefight...it takes enormous restraint for me not to run towards a firefight. I like being either part of the hammer or the anvil when flanking OpFor. I like laying up for an ambush and then popping the baddies and seeing them whirl around in confusion as they're wiped out. I like putting up so much of a fight that if my opponents do overcome us...the first thing out of their mouths afterwards is (censored for the kiddies), "Jebus, that was one fricken awesome fight, I thought we were goners right up until the end."

So...a bolt action rifle just doesn't do that for me. Love having teammates with them, love having long guns on tap for standoff shots when they're needed, love having precision fire to call in on demand.

But when the shots are flying, I'm too itchy to lay around and got to get into it (quite often this gets me dead...but it's airsoft and the next chance for fame & glory is only a medic or respawn away).

Have fun, get one and try it out. If you like the style of play, go for it. If not, grab an assault rifle and hit the front lines...it's a blast.

The adjustable FPS on the M82 is also useless, since you can only adjust down from the field limit.
It doesn't shoot any farther or more accurately than a fully upgraded VSR-10, therefore is entirely useless.

And it's great that your P90 shoots as far as someone's VSR, so do some PTW's
But the trick is, can you shoot someone from 15 feet away and still maintain your stealth? Because I can. My rifle is dead silent. Ask Amos

Just a thought that popped into my head, and I thought maybe someone could shed some light on the confusion.

Not sure if your question really got answered.

Based on what I bolded in your question above, I can explain why it sounds like a contradiction, when it's not really.

1 - Sniper rifles are allowed to shoot a a higher FPS at most games because as part of the role they need to shoot farther and FPS (but not just FPS) does impact distance. This increase in FPS makes folks nervous about who is shooting at them. That is why is just one of the reasons new folks are advised against starting with sniper rifles. We generally don't trust you.

2 - When folks tell you the opposite, that "it does not shoot hard enough to begin with and A LOT of money and time are needed to actually "snipe" with it." they are not contradicting the other point.

Airsoft rifles (as discussed in the rest of the thread) only have a good range of between 60-100ft. Stalking someone, sniping them, then getting away with that range limitation isn't REALLY fucking hard. When they tell you it doesn't shoot hard enough, they are saying that because of it's limited range, it's much harder to use an AS sniper rifle effectively.

It's not a contradiction. It's just two ways of looking at the same thing. It's not just about FPS and that can confuse folks.

Not based on the fact that you are shooting under powered single shot vs mostly upgraded full auto AEG.

And since most stock sniper rifle these days are clones, they are pretty crappy sometime.

Vodnik is right about the style of play. A tweeked sniper rifle suit a player that use stealth as his main weapon.

I went with your comparison, you didn't specify stock rifle vs. upgraded AEG, you campared a stock rifle to a springer pistol. I might have misread what you typed, or you mistyped what you were thinking.

It happens. I've seen you trying to say things in the past, thinking in french but typing in english, that sometimes I understand where you are coming from, other times it's totally a "Huh?" running through my head. Is all good.
