Radio Questions...come in...over!?!?

So last year i got a pair of Cobra 2 way radios...they worked well in some situations. Indoor and at close range without heavy brush or wooded areas mostly. They say a range of 13km and i know thats in a open clear area but i had some issues with them even in close prox. I see lots of radios that look or sound to be the same in that 20-50 dollar range on ebay.

What i would like is 2-4 units that have better range and are clear id also like a good headset with them. I know lots of players across Canada use certain types in different provinces. I'm not as concerned with hearing other radios that are operating in the area..just mine.

The ones i have seen mostly are:

Cobra
Mortorola- Talkabouts
Garmine- Rino
Midland

Anyone test or use any of these radios that have worked well for Airsoft?
Any recommendations? Is there things i should be looking for when i buy a 2way device?

Motorola GP68 5 Watt UHF

That's what most of the experienced players in Manitoba use.

Get a 5 watt radio, and you can use them over HUGE distances.

Where can i get some of those bad boys? 5 Watt is the magic number? Is that the signal strength of the radio?

Without going into alot of detail... basically yes.

And Ebay is where you want to look. Be careful of what type of charger it comes with though -- Alot of them come with euro plugs.

I got mine (wouxun 699e) from http://www.asiaradiosales.com
Really good service. They even have live support through msn messenger.
I received my radio with a wrong charger and without a battery. And no questions asked they sent me another package with the battery and a correct charger.

Also, if you're getting a GP68, make sure you're getting the 430 to 470 MHz frequency range, because the 403 to 433 MHz will be useless since you won't be able to use the FRS/GMRS frequencies.

I have heard of the Motorolla Saber II being used I'm not sure how many people in the market use them but that's an option too. Note they've been discontinued and are unsupported though so you're kind of SOL if you break it and have no clue about electronics and stuff like that. That being said, they're cheap as shit apparently (because they've been discontinued and unsupported) and you can find a lot of them from surplus stores and the like.

The saber II is just a dumbed down version of the GP68

I got a Wouxun UVD1-P and it works like a charm (Dual Band). The 689E is also very good (most of my team have that one)

First find out what the local players are on and make sure you can talk to them. No point in having an uber radio if you're the only guy on the field who can talk to yourself. No point in a radio shack bubble radio either if there is a decent net already in place.

Second make sure you can run a headset and mike with a PTT switch and factor that cost into the purchase. If it's just loose on your vest and squawking away everyone will no where you are. If you turn it down you may not be able to hear or reply to the messages.

So a radio like this....can it pick up other channels that are not being used by the same brand of radio? My shitty cobra ones sometimes would pick up small radio chatter in the area but not well. Like i said id rather get a few of these that are all the same for close buds but also the advantage of hearing others you are teamed with surly helps. Is there "standard" channels that all or most radios can all be apart of?

http://cgi.ebay.ca/Motorola-MT1000-1...ht_2251wt_1165

P.S: Thanks for the help and tips lads. Buying a 100$ radio that wont work for what i need would really be shitty. Cheers!!!

I used several types of radios, from shitty .5watts FRS to 5 watts "pro" radio.

And honestly, my motorola GMRS is plenty enough for everywhere we usually play.

1 or 2 watt is enough for outdoor field use. If you have trouble hearing or being herd with that, it's because the radio has shitty sensibility.
