I was woundering about the A&k saw (solid stock), is it good, because it is a china gun but people have been saying its good so does anyone have them, are they good or bad.

To add the my review, I'm still quite happy with mine. It's seen 2 games (Op Drug Bust and Border Wars 2). Other than having lost the box mag cover, everything is still working fine. The hopup mod still works fine, but I have a CA hopup unit on the way for it anyway. Might as well replace it with something that doesn't need to be rigged and modded to work properly.

I used to be a c9 gunner so the appeal of the m249 is definitely there. I keep trying to tell myself it is a BAD idea to get one as a first AEG, but I am afraid that little voice is going to loose out to the evil one that cries out for superior firepower.

Well, the SAW can be fun for sure, but other than a more copious supply of ammo, it doesn't offer any more advantage over another AEG.

I should add that I've never actually fielded it myself. Friends used it at the games we played. It was a force to be reckoned with at Border Wars II. I found myself on the receiving end of it a couple of times (my friend was playing on the other team).

With the hopup mod, my friend said that it was outranging most other AEGs. He was set up on a path behind a barrier. He said he could see BBs from the other team hitting the ground 10+ feet in front of him, but he could tag them from where he was sitting. I'm going to have to put that to the test myself someday...

Marginally superior firepower.

Usually for every actual MG on the field, there are three rifles setup for high ROF and/or have an auto-winding hicap.

understood, but when if rules state no hicaps, the support weapons have an advantage. Being 6 foot 7 and having been a c9 gunner I am not concerned with the weight of an m249, and I already know I am not going to get hundreds of ramboesq kills.

I know that as a machine gunner, your job is to suppress the enemy so your section/platoon can advance and get the kills. No real glory, only the satisfaction of putting fear into someones heart...

Well, at your size, I think you're well suited for the gunner role. While I don't think it's the ideal starter gun, in your situation considering your size and former experience as a gunner, I think you'd be fine with it. Throw a lipo battery in that thing and you'll get crazy rof and people will definitely want to keep their heads down...

Well since you said it's your first AEG here's my take.

It's a bit finicky and takes some tweaks to get right. Buy a used one that's already been gone over and adjusted.

I think lots of folks get them because they're cool, then wind up not using them very often, and when it's closet cleaning time they're on the block.

I'll put it this way, the CA 249's solid stock has been known to break off through constant use, and the CA 249 is the standard 249. And there's not a single thing on the A&K 249 that's better than the CA 249...

As long as you don't abuse it the A&K is a cheap LMG, but it's a pain in the ass to upgrade, just like any other chinese AEG lol

Having done a side-by-side comparison at Border Wars with a CA249 Mk II, I can definitely attest to that. The A&K is a good gun on its own, but when you compare it to the CA, you can certainly see it's not as solid and its operation isn't quite as smooth. But for the price difference, it's an acceptable tradeoff as long as you don't abuse it.

So what would be the best choice M249/MK.46? The G&P, Classic Army or Ares/Star? forget about Top I could never afford one of those.
I would also be upgrading it.

From those I've seen, I would say the Classic Army is the best best of the higher end guns for price / performance. I wouldn't even see much of a need to upgrade it out of the box. Hell, I don't even see a need to upgrade my A&K (CA clone) other than for its wonky hopup. If it works reliably, shoots accurately, gives you no problems, there's no real need to upgrade.
