That's very true. Buy one good gun, 1 vest, 1 BDU, a few mags, and you can be happily gaming your ass off for years. It really is only as expensive as you make it.

I'm primarily a collector (as I was with air guns before airsoft), so that's my main reason for buying everything I like. I could have easily gotten away with only 1 AEG and 1 sidearm. And really, even the sidearm is optional. However, with the current state of airsoft in Canada, the slightly open door we currently enjoy to acquire our toys could slam shut at any moment. I would rather get the guns I want now while I can still get them.

I thought the door was opening a little more?

It's opening in the sense that we have more 'private retailers' and cheaper prices than we've seen from the big public retailers. The public ones have all been driven out of business except 007, and a quick glance at the 007 review threads here will confirm that getting in touch with Ken is about as easy as tracking down Bigfoot, so it's like he wasn't there. I won't even touch his celestial pricing.

I'm not saying the hammer will fall on the private retailers, but this site is monitored by authorities. You never know what could happen. All it takes is one good incident (like someone robbing a bank with airsoft guns) to set the panic in motion and have a big crackdown. Again, I'm not saying this WILL happen, but the possibility exists in our rather gun-shy country. I have the means to buy what I want, therefore I do when I see something I want.

How about someone saving someone with an airsoft gun for once...

In my very first airsoft game (only two months ago) thanks to Ken of 007's newbie games:

My total cost was $32.

Years ago I had bought genuine vintage army surplus camo from Value Village for like $10 for the entire suit. Never had the opportunity to use until now. I bought an almost perfectly matching camo hunting hat from Wal-mart for $1. I bought a set of yellow shooting glasses from Wal-Mart for $6.

I borrowed a genuine nato issue backpack. I found my rollerblading kneepads from 1991 (NEON YELLOW) and spraypainted them to match. Found used workout gloves that were thick leather and had fingers cut out. Put them on top of thin sport gloves with grip. Found old pair of hiking boots, almost spray painted them too.

Borrowed a CA G36. Made a gunsling from two old guitar straps and free caribeeners. Field cost was $15 for the whole day. I think I looked pretty decent. I was proud of how little I had spent and I had full gear.

Looking for my first real AEG though at the moment. Then I know it'll spiral if I start gaming.

I would say that about 50% of the money I've spent on airsoft has been for completely optional gear. Outside of a gun, goggles, batteries, mags, something to carry them in and ammunition to shoot myou don't *need* anything. You don't *need* an Eagle CIRAS, or MAGNUM combats, or genuine CP Multicam.

Airsoft is not more "addicting" than any other hobby; it's only as bad as you're willing to let it get.

A sidearm and extra long mags, and stuff like that isn't "the basics" :P

RM, i'd hate to see the tally of how much you've spent on your pistols.

I tallied up my cost one day, all of it bought within a 2 month time period. I cried. a lot.

No kidding. I've spent $600 total on my Hicapa and it isn't that special. Just a metal slide and barrel, and tightbore, and a bunch of mags.
