Defining a sniper rifle

I am planning on buying something to use as a sniper. Gas is out because of consistency issues but i still want semi. I am just wondering if i bought a ca m14 and dissabled the full auto would it be considered a sniper.(would i be able to have a 400-450fps limit on it)
thanks in advance.

I remember asking sha-do this, me thinks he said as long as its semi automatic you can have it go no higher then 450 at range but bolt action you have a little more room to add speed

my modifying an AEG to shoot at those speeds is dangerous for the gun. I wouldn't be surprised if your gun broke after a mag or so. In Ontario, at least at the fields that i play at, snipers are capped at 450 fps, full auto AEG's are capped at 400fps, but that might be in semi as well. Reason being is that even in semi auto, you can dump a lot more shots into a target then you can with a bolt action. i wouldn't be surprised if you were restricted to that. Even then, your mechbox will be under a lot of stress. If you dont like gas and want an all year round sniper, get a spring bolt action. Ive heard a lot of good from the TM VSR-10 line, but it is really up to you. That way, you can have consistent shots at 450 fps and use the gun w.e you want to because it wont be affected by temp.

Or max out a CA25. With its beast of a mechbox, US users have them at 600fps semi only @_@

Umm, no, that is an awful descrition of a sniper rifle. That should be the definition of an 'Anti-Materiel Rifle'.

To the poster, best you can get in-so-far as an AEG to use as a 'sniper platform' would be the TM M14. Avoid the G&G M14, it's not very well made, and avoid the CA M14, it's not very good either (and considering it uses very thin wires, if you put a heavier spring in it the motor will draw more current, and possibly burn out your wiring/fuse very easily.)

And you DON'T need to set up an AEG to shoot over 400fps, just learning to track your BB flight and watching the way it reacts in the air, as well as tuning your gun best as you can will do you just fine for a sniper platform.

Dunno man we had an M14 up at 470fps and it shot a hell of alot straighter and in windy weather than a 400fps rifle

well ya cause it was shooting faster...duh
the difference is, the M14 will not last long at that speed then a bolt action rifle will.

M14's are Version 7... Mine's been shooting 410-430 all season and there hasn't been a problem with the mechbox (although there is an air leak somewhere..)

Edit: I find airsoft sniping is more about movement and being in the right position at the right time... Sure having a finely tuned gun is helpful, but not required.

Take into account as soon as you shoot with the M14, Everyone is going to know where you are because of the noise of the motor. I use to play a sneaky "Marksmen" role with my M14.. But I hated the fact that everytime I'd shoot at some one they'd know exactly where I was...

Then I got a bolt action

You can't play as a "Sniper" because after your first shot your position is given away...

Designated marksmen AEG platforms are fine and dandy

At my local field, basically anything with a motor is capped at 400fps, full auto or no. Semi-auto is almost exactly the same as full auto in airsoft because you aren't trying to draw a bolt back after every shot.

Gas and spring sniper rifles (or anything you need to cock before each shot) are 450fps.
These rules are firm, I don't know about your field, but at ours if you are chronied higher than these limits the gun is banned until you downgrade.
