Ottawa - Cops Seize 24 Pellet and Air Guns

Cops Seize 24 Pellet and Air Guns
Josh Pringle
Thursday, June 21, 2007

Ottawa Police seized 24 pellet and air guns after responding to a complaint about a pellet gun being fired in the Highland Park area.

An investigation determined the pellet gun rounds originated from a home on Wembly Street.

19-year-old Christopher Dick has been charged with careless use of a firearm, possession of a weapon dangerous, unauthorized possession of a prohibited weapon and mischief.

The Guns and Gangs unit says a majority of the pellet guns seized were found "loaded", ready to fire.

*****

From what I heard on the T.V. the cops where called when someone called them after hearing shots being fired in a back yard.

And people bitch at us vets when we say do not shoot in your backyard, in a park or other places. I am not saying I told you so in a mean way.

But

I told you so!!!

2 things, first there arent firearms, since to be qualified as a fire arm, there needs to be an explosion to propel the projectiel. Seconde airsoft is illegal from what the police say? can some one enlighten me, cause is it just me or the police a like blind mice that say : well mr we got our self some thing that looks like a firarm, nothing looks like a firearm then a firearm, so it must be it. so lets press all the charges we can that are related to firearms.

Most, if not all, municipalities have some bylaw about not discharging a firearm within city limits. Typically for the purposes of the bylaw, airguns, bb guns, even bows are classified as firearms. Whether LE or the Crown can get the charges to stick with a federal charge remains to be seen. Also, perhaps one or more of the bb guns shot hot enough to classify as a firearm. The onus is on the Crown to prove though.

Given the amount he owned "24", he must have had a few running over 500fps. Unless of course he had his PAL... thing is, anyone with that many guns and or experience should already know the city bylaws and follow them.

There does NOT need to be an explosion to be a firearm. A firearm is defined as:

Quote:
both a high muzzle velocity (greater than 152.4 meters or 500 feet per second) and a high muzzle energy (greater than 5.7 joules or 4.2 foot-pounds).
There ARE pellet guns sold by companies such as GAMO which are classified as firearms and need licenses to own.

Generally wherever there are different bylaws for the area. Such as going out in the country on open land... away from the city and houses/backyards.

Its like airsoft guns, in most cities you aren't allowed to fire them in your backyard because they fall under the bylaws... but you still end up going places to play.

If you read the original story, they claim that at least 10 of the guns siezed were replicas.

So you go out of your local municipality, into boonie land and get dinged for shooting an air rifle on someones private property? Or better yet, Gov't owned prov park? Lets face it folks....you can't take them anywhere, because if its not one person/group bitching you out and screaming bloody murder, it'll be someone else.

I didn't clarify I guess. What I meant was on your own land or on the land of someone else with their permission. Not just going off into a provincial park or something.

Airgunners also host shooting events/gatherings.

OR! You have city by-laws with their OWN definitions of what classifies as a fire-arm discharge with in city limits.

Ottawa City Fire-arm Discharge By-Law NO. 2002-344
http://ottawa.ca/city_services/bylaw.../index_en.html

Quote:
"firearm" means any class or type of gun or other firearm including a shotgun, rifle, air-gun, spring-gun, long-bow or cross-bow;
If the device is used to injure people, it will not matter where it is or what it was, it will be deemed a "weapon". If you use a pencil to stab your neighbor because he/she got an A+ on their special ed test, the police will take the "weapon" into custody as evidence, not the "pencil". Heck if you use an elastic band in an attempt to injure someone it will be deemed a weapon!

Even if all these air-guns were just your local CT stuff all UNDER 500FPS, and the device was discharged it will still classify itself as a fire-arm in city limits. If the thing is turned on someone it will be deemed a weapon. So! We learn that you don't shoot in your back yard, you don't shoot at your local park, and you don't make the device visible to the public in ANY fashion as no matter WHAT you do it may appear a threat to someone and next thing you know, SWAT comes along with their 9mm rounds and don't call their hits! ((But you will ))

Anyway, with light of all the recent activities from pellet guns and paintball guns in the city of Ottawa I do not foresee a long period of time to wait before both are banned with in city limits, and not just the discharge of them. There have been I think 6 people shot and permanently injured from paint balls to the face this year already. A few kids with pellet guns, one of which being at a school.

When are we going to ban pollen, thats what I want to know; that shit causes more grief than ANYTHING else! :smack:

Don't forget that some municipalities do allow for the firing of airguns (bb guns/pellet guns) within "town limits"...as well as the use of pestisides, and loud music :P
