Star Carry Handle For G36 With Scope & Red Dot with pics

While a G36 carry handle with both scope and RDS unit have been available for a while (from Dragon Arms) the scope was typically horrible to look through and the RDs was a dummy, not even see through and with a very low power laser built in. Now wiht Stars new entery, you can finally have a Bundeswehr-standard G36K, G36 or MG36 with a functional 3.5x scope and functional RDS (no laser).

The carry handle comes in a cardboard box containing the handle, 2 LR1 ("N"size) batteries (for the RDS) and, oddly, one mounting screw with one regular hex nut and one nylock hex nut on it. To install, remove the three screws from the original handle/rail, slide the assembly to the rear a bit and lift off. Reverse procedure to install the Star handle. Had mine on in all of five minutes and used a tiny bit of Locktite 222 on the screws so they wouldn't come out unless I want them to.

The finish is similar to G&P, a very dark grey, not quite black. So it sticks out from the black ABS TM uses, but that's ok for me. It doesn't rock or wiggle once installed. The scope recepticle is different from the Hensoldt version the real steel version uses but is clear and quite nice to use. It has range markings for 800 (8), 600 (6), 400(4) and 200(2) meters as well as three crosshairs, two below the main center one. The RDs is clear and, well, it's a dot. It runs on two batteries and has an "on/off" switch. The RDs is mounted a bit high, but I find I have a problem using the iron sights of the original G36C rail and the scope of the G&P carry handle when I wear goggles. So the height may be ok once I get used to it. Both scope and RDS appear to be adjustable for windage & elevation, but will test this weekend to be sure.

Going gaming this Saturday so I can report on performance (with the G&P "V" folding stock) later.

How many brightness settings does the RDS have?

NONE! I was very disapointed at this, but in the sun shine of the game today, the dot was very diffucult to see. The RDS switch seems to has two settings - on & off! Now having said this, I don't know how long the batteries the unit came with have been laying around, so I'm off to Wally World tomorrow to see if they have a couple of lithium "N" batteries to try, but I won't get my hopes up.

Another MAJOR problem I had was with the battery port. It doesn't lock in place. Oh, it keys in and twists on, but there is nothing to prevent it from untwisting and launching itself out of the RDS unit. I lost it, and the battery pack, on the field, not once, not twice, but three times before I just took it out completely and put it in my pocket. This is an easy fix for my (have a dremel and tons of different bits) but it should have come from STAR with a locking cover. It is increadibly easy to come out. Rub your finger against it, rub your gear against it or just put you rifle down a bit too hard and out she pops!

So far those are the only gripes I have, one fixable, one maybe not.

This is a very nice gun. Got shot in the ass with it today.

By far the nicest G36 variant I've seen.

Ok, finally got some new "N" cell batteries and they don't make any difference in the dots brightness what so ever. Also needed to machine a couple of slots into the retaining groove of the battery port cover to lock it in place. These two issues alone, (and these being the reason for purchasing the bridge), would have prevented me from buying this carry handle. I would have just gotten the one with the rail instead and mounted and actual working RDS.

Save your bucks unless you want the "look" or unless STAR "fixes" these problems.

I hear the same thing from a guy in Montreal, I'm happy to have read your review before I buy one

I feel you on this

I bought the same thing, however I happen to love this add on. You are very accurate about the batt port and the functionallity of both the RDS and scope. I play SWAT style so the limitations are acceptable for me. I did use this set up in the field and know the frustrations that you have mentioned. If someone plays outdoors then do not buy this set up, indoors this setup works well, for me for me anyways.
