I exploded my AEG

First off , this is my first post and I just wanted to say how awesome this site is. It has been an amazing resource for me. Having said that ,I am a complete noob when it comes to AS.

I purchased a brand new Ares AR-013 from a local gun store. I took it home as giddy as a little school girl , charge the battery , plug it in and proceed to screw the stock back in. All of a sudden thick grey smoke starts pouring out of the gun. I quickly unscrew the stock and the battery falls out. The plastic connecting piece between the battery and the gun is melted.

I didnt even fire a single shot! Now I have to see if a gun doc can salvage my mess.

Please feel free to make fun of me now.

Welcome to the site and sorry to hear about your mishap.

You should start by filling out your profile (where you're located etc), will make it easier finding people in your area who might be able to help.

Also what kind of battery did you use? Sounds like something went horribly wrong with the battery more than the gun itself (since it occurred without you pulling the trigger).

Id say unless you really screwed up the process of plugging the battery in, and screwing the stock on without pinching or damaging the wires while doing so. This is a a probable defect and you should contact whom you purchased this "brand new" aeg off of right away, with full documentation and pictures before you try to do anything to it yourself.

It sounds like you short circuited the wiring. It most likely occurred when you were screwing the stock back on.

Why was the stock unscrewed to begin with?

i think he means the butt plate i just looked on ares website and, the gun he bought has a twist off stock plate so you can put a battery in the buffer tube. also like everyone has said take it back to the place you bought it, and welcome to ASC.

I see what you mean. That could have caused a short as well, if a wire was under the screw and he screwed down on it.

What kind of battery? NiCd, NiMh, or Lipo? If the first two it's not so bad but if the latter yeah you're lucky your house didn't explode and burn down as can happen if you're not careful with lipos and/or abuse them heavily.

NB: Lipo's are safe as long as you follow common sense and take care of them, but if you abuse them they can explode in a miraculous fashion (eg. the laptop battery exploding thing that was in the news a few years ago).

Thanks for the kind welcome.

I will take it back tomorrow and hopefully I can work something out with them.

I was using a 9.6v NiMh 1400mAh 2/3A battery.

The problem is, you bought an ARES lol

Slightly off topic, but what kind of charger are you using?

Both, the wall charger is garbage. You will need to purchase a better quality charger.
As far as the Battery goes anything by intellect is shit get a better quality battery and you will want to change the connectors to deans or the like.

And sorry for your loss hope the retailer makes good on some kind of warrantee

Looks like the battery may have been shorted out so that means a wire may have been pinched and bare wire touched and it arced. Hopefully none of the internals are damaged but as for the battery it's probably toast.

As for the wallcharger, get a "real" charger. Preferably one with a "negative delta V" (means it's a smart charger) rather than your current "dumb charger". It doesn't need to have a fancy LCD screen but at least it should have an LED light that tells you when it's done.

ie. this first one is a smartcharger since it has an led to tell you when it's done (obviously not for airsoft though, that's a cell charger):

This imax B6 is also a smartcharger but 90% of the functions you're probably never going to use:
