Question from a concerned player.

I recently been in contact with a family member (cousin) whos under 18 and started taking interest in airsoft, and try to set things in straight with him in saying this is a sport that requrires a lot of patience/maturity especially when you can't have a gun till your 18. During our conversation, I was made known that one of his friend, who is a minor is actually hosting an airsoft event where plenty of minors attend and they are just required a parental concent. Weather this is a lie I'll leave it for debate, I'm gonna assume he is telling the truth.

Is this in any way legal?
say if a law inforcement officer walked in and ask for a person incharge, is there going to be a shitstorm?

I've told my cousin to stay the hell away till I can get some clear answers, since I want him to start this sport on a good note.

Thanks

Dude, this can open a whole crap load of issues.
-If they are playing on private property, they had better be aware of the local bylaws.
-If they are playing in view of the public, the police will be called in, and it'll only take one idiot to screw things up.
-If they are playing where it is all good with the bylaws, not in view of the public, and not trespassing, there had better be parental presence....a parent or adult that WILL take responsibility if something happens...legal responsibility.

It's better that these under aged games get organized at insured paint ball fields where each of the participants have a parent (or legal guardian) present. It'll save us all a world of headaches.

yeah sorry about that, they are playing at a laser trek location, not just out somewhere outside. Sorry forgot to mention that.

Dude not a problem. From what I understand TREK does their own thing and the players in Calgary are fine with that (never been there myself though).

At least it's not in the streets or something and TREK does have it's own rules (14 with waiver signed by parent/guardian IIRC). So who cares it's his (Larry?) business and he'll run it the way he wants to.

True, Laser TREK does their own thing, but not all the players are fine with it. It's just that the owner pays no attention to our requests to restrict Airsoft to 18+

It really varies. There are quite a few laws regarding as to what is a firearm, replica firearm and airsoft firearm.

There is a useful thread here: http://www.airsoftcanada.com/showthread.php?t=23034

It's long, but it will give the detailed info about airsoft when it comes to legal issues.

Eg. For instance, if one of the kids modifies their shooter to fire at 500+ FPS, he will be in a world of shit if discovered, since by law anything firing at that velocity may be considered a firearm.

I see... as long as some one is there to bare some responsibilty, I've relayed that info fo my cousin but I did stress that this is out of the norm and not all player approves of this decision by Laser Trek. I do trust his ability to judge what he should and shouldn't do just don't want he getting into situation where the problem might even extend to his parents. Now... on to tirgger control.

True, but it's his/her business, they can do with it what they please.

Does he go around telling you how to do your job?

Absolutely. Someone must be legally responsible for the undertaking of the minors under their control, albeit someone who is running a business....as long as he (they) realize he's liable for their actions. So he should start exercising some guidance of some type, and start paying better attention to what's going on during his watch.
As for the fact they are minors, as long as there is a legal guardian taking responsibility there is little that can be done about enforcing the 18+ thing, especially if they have parental consent.
If certain players don't want to participate in events where minors are present, they shouldn't go (don't financially support some one who is running something you don't agree with)......set up your own events.

...as for trigger control.........good luck.

A local paintball place is basically doing what you speak of as well, allowing minors to play and such with certain restrictions mind you.

As mentioned above it comes down to it, his land his rules.

Just vote with your pocket, don't support fields/hosts that allow minors if it bothers you.

I know I don't...

I used to play at Wasaga when I was 16 years old. I am 26 now but it is a touchy subject of course.
