Holosight questions

Firstly just want to know if you can use rechargable batteries, or have to purchase a certain type of batter. Secondly I'm looking at the 551 and 552 Holosight, but wanted to know what is the actual difference between the two other than the short and long designs.

Real ones use AA's.

The actual difference is one is short, one is longer.
Also the RS 551 has been discontinued and used an N cell battery, replaced in EOTECH's lineup by the XPS.

"Real" EoTech/L3 551.A65 HWS' (I have one) use type-N batteries, and their larger brother 552.A65 HWS' use AA's as SP has pointed out.

As for the differences between the 551 and 552, that's it -- just the battery requirements and the amount of "rail estate" occupied by the respective designs. Performance is identical, reticles are identicle, both are NV-capable, etc.

Regarding the clones...they vary somewhat. Do a search and you will find many discussion threads on the topic.

Crunchmeister did a great review on a RS Bushnell Holosight and a Hurricane one.

Yep, those XPS series sights are very nice! Technology continues to evolve. They have significantly smaller rail estate requirement, use a single 123-type battery and none (so far) of the older 551's shortcomings w/respect to battery spring weakness over time. Too bad they're ridiculously difficult and expensive to obtain up here...

The 553 series though is also very nice, having dual ARMS mounts and it sits a bit higher so it can clear a top-mounted PEQ-15 without needing a riser.
