2. Yes, you can use a "stick" battery and put it in the battery tray (above the charging handle, under the dust cover).
My Kraken ran for two years without a shim job just fine then I sold it off, and we are talking hardcore gaming use and when not gaming, target shooting. Sold it off before the new user finally shimmed it.
