Some people would never thing about letting their child near a real rifle that shoots real ammo, but a BB gun, they think what harm can that do?
I think it goes a bit further than that. A parent would likely know what a BB or pellet gun is, and would teach their kids to treat them accordingly (i.e., as RS). However, airsoft guns are relatively new(ish). The parent probably would file it under the same category as a nerf gun, rubber dart gun or cap gun simply because it's made of clear plastic.

Still, that's no excuse for bad parenting. Ignorance is, in the eyes of the law, not a valid defense.
